I got crossfire working in FSX

Recommended Posts

Ping pong,I tired this out(crossfire) in fs9 . It works with my two 5870 video cards. One of the cards has 2gb of memory while the other only has 1gb.I performed several tests(crossfire, one card of 2gb then the single card with 1gb) and found my system worked best with only one 5870 card which has the lower ram of 1gb.This really shocked me !I thought the more ram the better results. What do you think? System specs: Intel Core i7-980X Extreme Edition Gulftown 3.33GHz Prolimatech Megahalems Rev.B CPU Cooler G.SKILL Trident 6GB (3 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 2000 (PC3 16000) Triple Channel ASRock X58 Extreme LGA 1366 Intel X58 ATX Intel Motherboard (fs9 and windows xp pro 32 bit sp3) Intel X25-M Mainstream SSDSA2MH160G2R5 2.5" 160GB SATA II MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)(back up) Intel X25-V SSDSA2MP040G2R5 2.5" 40GB SATA II MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) Radeon HD 5870 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.1 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Power color HD 5870 2GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.1 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Creative 70SB073A00000 7.1 Channels 24-bit 96KHz PCI Interface Sound Blaster X-Fi XtremeGamer Acer GD235HZbid Black/orange 23.6" 2ms Widescreen 1080p 120Hz NVIDIA 3D Vision LCD Monitor Diablotek PHD Series PHD750 750W ATX12V / EPS12V Power Supply

I went ahead and tested one more time just to make sure I had it right.Crossfire gave me about twice the frames .So ,I stand corrected. For some reason FSDT KDFW was giving me strange frame rates in the first test.I tired my testing with fly tampa sceneries getting anywhere from 30 to 240 fps with crossfire enabled.Which without crossfire, I didnt even come close to those frames.

I set it up and got it working in FSX but FSX freezes up about 1 min after loading an aircraft. Tried it 3 times :( my card is the 5970.

When Using 10.8 crossfire profile, that way doesn't work well by my test, but 10.8 driver has batter support for FSX, so I 'm now still Using FSX.exe, with out crossfire X support.

Hey guys, I have not been following this thread so sorry for the lack of responsesI am not a tech guy, just a guy who likes to tinker so I can only tell you what I did. There are so many variables here so I can't even begin to troubleshoot the potential problemsfor example I used Crysis.exe (each game has it's own profile)I use BP=0I use Bojote's Shaders 3.0I have my cards overclocked to 900 Mhz eachI am using the 10.8 drivers (other drivers may be better)I use 4x Box antialiasing and 16x AF with adaptive multisampling.I use the external framerate limiter-----------Also for me the crossfire only works in fullscreen mode, but not in windowed mode. One thing I also noticed is that textures load much faster, there's no texture pop in I see with nvidia cards, for example the buildings at FTX tamworth do not lag at all.bottom line, It will take a ton of testing to figure out what is the best of all possible configurations

I am not sure where I got it, but 1.2 should work just as well, 1.4 only allows you to set AA and AF in the program which I use CCC for anyway. If you send me your email, I could probably email it to you, it is freeware after all.

I can confirm that here It works!!!!!!!!!!!I'm using ATI CF Xtension application. My setup is core i7-875k, 2x Radeon 5770 Vapor-X 1GB.I see a boost in frame rate, in a particular situation (starting on the runway with my preferred free flight setup), from 45fps (no CF forced) to 70fps (CF Forced). My Options of "ATI CF Xtension" are:- Force CrossFire Method -> Auto, determine best by driver (actually it uses "AFR method") (others methods rather than Auto or AFR give no fps gain, and create artifacts to me).- Direct3D as Rendering- Profile: arma2.exeI forced Video Quality Settings to 4xAsync and 4xAA filters (but it should no difference in using CF).Hope this helps!Bye!

Regardless of whether this enables rendering via Crossfire, it cannot improve performance, it can only make it worse due to the inherent penalties imposed by Alternate Frame Rendering (AFR). It is actually likely to decrease performance due to the additional CPU overhead and PCI-e traffic. FSX is simply not limited by the GPU.

Unless you run multi-monitor with any decent level of FSAA. lol

Even then you'll run into CPU limitations long before you'll ever begin to stress the GPU, unless your GPU is weak.

That's a given. There really isn't a CPU made that FSX won't take full advatage of. Despite that, high levels of FSAA in a multi-monitor setup will plow through a GPUs memory pretty quickly (depending on resolution and settings, of course).

Am afraid Tmax is correct, Tried NV-SLI with, 285 GTX, 460, 480 and 580, but it is like you said, start pushing res and AA (32S+) and there IS an improvement:Back in the day SLI test results on FSX with NV 8800 cardsSide note though it may seem obvious, driver revisions have a much larger impact on SLI or even getting a working SLI profile to function in FSX.It also maybe worth while to know that NV is again supporting FSX -should read MUCH more than they have the past two years.Hopefully FLIGHT takes advantage of SLI/CF

Yeah... We all know that FSX is limited by CPU... It represents like 80% of the performance and 20% is the GPU and bla bla bla... but... with this tweak that 20% is more like 40% now...I'll be honest... few hours ago I was looking foward the gtx 580 just because the rendering speed of clouds and the increase of fps... Now I can say that this tweak saved me at least $1300 in GPUs/ waterblocks and at least 200w in my pc consumption...I forgot to mention in my previous post that the smoothness while flying was noticeably improved and for some reason that I can't explain the textures are loaded almost without delay...Before this magic tweak I was getting excellent fps considering the settings I have... but in heavy Wx the performance was affected in an average of 10 frames slower in heavy areas... so you can imagine flying in clear skies over LAX with an average fps of 22 (UT2 is @ 100%)... add to that a heavy thunderstorm and you'll get 12 FPS... now the average under the same conditions are 25 fps just by following this tweak... Clouds are no more an issue... That is NOT coincidence...I only can speak for the HD5870 in crossfire... Big%20Grin.gif Dexter...
