Smart Assembly CTD

Recommended Posts

Recently I have developed an intermittent CTD with the smart assembly error. This occurred repeatedly on a LOWW-EGCC flight with real weather (FSX). I have tried various T/S attempts, including reloading the drivers for nVidia 470 GTX card. After reinstalling, I used the 747-400 for a "stress test" from LOWW, but instead of loading a flight plan, simply cruised to altitude and set a course to the west. The sim ran 8 hours overnight without any problem. I "refueled completely" in flight off of the drop down menu and continued the flight for another ten hours while at work today. So, I figured the problem is "gone." But tonight, I started another flight at LOWW enroute EGCC and about 200 miles into the flight I got the CTD with the smart assembly error, which is approximately the same distance I go from Vienna before the flight goes south. While I don't think PMDG is the issue, are there any T/S insights you have for how the 747 interacts with a loaded flight plan vice flying straight and level on A/P. Wondering if it might help narrow down what is causing the problem. I am running the full boat of REX, UTX, GEX, ORBC, ASE ... and many other. Thanks in advance,Scott Robinson

Smartassembly is usually a SimConnect error in my experience.Try installing simconnect from here: http://ultimatetraffic.flight1.net/files/SimConnect.zip.
Thanks for the suggestion - that was one of the T/S approaches I had tried previously to correct the issue, but seemingly with no success. I have also verified C++2008 is up to date along with all other Microsoft system components. I am running UT II 2.08 and have it fully up to date. I have read other T/S notes on smart assembly, but I haven't found a listing of add-ons that might be the potential cause. The event viewer is listing the g3d.dll as the module in question during the CTD.Scott

Yos - Thanks for your assistance. I ended up reinstalling Java and the problem has cleared for me on the LOWW-EGCC route. So while I tried many fixes including your recommendation, in the end it seemed to be a slightly outdated Java runtime version.Scott

That is good to know, I had the same error and I want to update Netframe 4.0 from Microsoft. Can you tell me what version of Java you are using? Did you go to java.com?

Sure, I downloaded from Sun's site and have both the 32 bit and 64 bit loaded, Java 6 Update 23 and Java 6 Update 23 (64 bit), 6.0.230. Uninstalled old versions, rebooted, cc cleaner, then fresh install. Seems to have cleared the error and CTD. I am running WIN 7 64 bit.Scott

Since when did FS ever use Java??!!!!Best regards,Robin.
I am not a software engineer and I don't assert that FS does use Java. What I have observed and what I shared was that when I reinstalled an updated version of Java, I stopped having CTD with a smartassembly warning, and an event log pointing to the g3d.dll, that was repeatable on the particular flight that I flew from LOWW-EGCC. After this reinstall, and following multiple testing flights, the CTD did not occur again. As to the interaction of software components, ... I am not sure.Scott

Hi Scott,Very interesting. On a flight from EHAM to LSZH (with ASE loaded), I always get CTD's, due to the G3D.dll, after 45-50 minutes flight..So this JAVA philosophy is perhaps for me a solution? However, where can I find JAVA? I looked in the installed programs-list (Control Panel). There I don't find it. I looked also into the C:\Program Files (x86) directory. Also not there. Is JAVA automatically installed, when installing Winows7 64 bit? What's your advice in this. Thanks for any help.Henk Altena

Java should have absolutely nothing to do with FSX - it certain has nothing to do with PMDG aircraft.
Ryan,Thanks for the quick answer. I already did not fully understand it. Though Scott is very convincing, and I encountered identical CTD's. Could there be another cause for those CTD's, always caused by module G3D.dll???Thanks alreadyHenk Altena

yeah, it shouldn't, if the java written frame-limiter tool for FSX or e.g. the IVAP Online ATC client isn't activeThe automatic update of JAVA Environment from 6.21 to 6.22 crashed my IVAO connected FSX@Sp2 (W7 64bit) at the IVAO flight from LOWW to KFLL! And the error window on my desktop pointed directly to java. The Windows Eventmanager told me FSX.exe crash reason: MD-11(gauge).dll.I still remember, cause it was the one and only crash i had with an PMDG aircraft in 1700h flighttime. Since this event, i prevent java automatic updates generally.Java written Onlinetools as ivap v2 interact via simconnect with PMDG (traffic, whatever) and an JAVA update during flight can even crash PMDG aircrafts under certain circumstances.maybe some kind of this happened here.

A few months later now and the program has suddenly reappeared, although I haven't added any new software addon's in a good while. This time updating Java didn't work and updating .net and visual basic 2008 seem to not help. Any other recommended ideas on how I might "correct" what ails my sim. This time the crash comes on a short KPDX - KCLM flight about 80 miles into the trip. Thanks for any insights, Scott

I know you said you did, but try updating the visual basic and .net runtimes:Visual Basic: http://support.microsoft.com/gp/vbruntime.NET: http://www.microsoft.com/net/download.aspxMake sure you have all the .NET runtimes installed, 1.1, 2, 3, 3.5, and 4. Thank you for this. I will run through your comprehensive list and report back on whether the problem (not program) disappears. Scott
