It seems like you have two questions here ...

is that [scenery] the one north of KSEA ?
Yes, downtown Seattle is located just a little north of KSEA ... however I *think* they recently disabled Demo users from installing Custom Scenery folder during the 10.04 beta period, so you might not be able to use this scenery now.

Whenever I try to create using osm2xp I always get "no dsf generated" during build.

That is normal, I exported a small section of mumbai (from Mumbai central to Nariman point) and this is what I got.

05/04/12 00:39:48 : Listing tiles in file mumbai.osm
05/04/12 00:39:48 : listing of tiles complete
05/04/12 00:39:48 : 2 tile(s) found
05/04/12 00:39:48 : Starting X-Plane 9 generation of tile 18/72
05/04/12 00:40:11 : stats : 734 buildings, 0 forests, 0 street lights, 0 objects. (generation took 0h0m22s)
05/04/12 00:40:24 : Starting X-Plane 9 generation of tile 19/72
05/04/12 00:40:26 : Tile 19/72 is empty, no dsf generated
05/04/12 00:40:26 : Generation finished.

I noticed that Mumbai is on a peninsula surrounded by water, most likely the ignored tile is water. I would not worry too much about it.

I have not updated XPX just once or twice after installation if IIRC.

Yep mumbai is an island :) But mumbai has a lot of buildings and I don't see much buildings is that due to openstreetmap still does not have more info for Mumbai ?  should the airport also show me the buildings (ICAO - VABB ) ?

Thanks for your reply.

OSM's data is only as good as to what people have contributed.

Is there any tool that I can use to map from google or put up buildings in openstreet and then download the .osm file  ?

For Mac & Linux users there is gmaps for X-plane http://members.ferra...cavicchi/GMaps/
and for Windows users there is a plugin called g2xpl ... these programs will allow you to grab orthophoto's from google maps/earth service. From there you can use OSM2XP to generate 3d facades for X-Pane from the building placement work that people have done for OSM.

I cannot find the latest version of G2XPL I have the old version 2.1 but it does not work. Can you point me towards the latest release from where I can download it ?

I think you have to donate to the guy who made the g2xpl plugin to get the latest version.

Alternatively, you can install Virtualbox and run Ubuntu Linux in it (both are free), and then run Gmaps for linux in this environment to build your ortho-scenery.

Ok.

I  have been Linux using it since years :). I think I will try XPX on Linux as I heard it gives better performance. And I also have Gmaps. :)

Hmm I looked at Gmap but that is same as Tileproxy for FSX , so there are no elevated buildings I can make ?  Can I create Gmap first in Linux and then use the maps under windows ? as before installing XPX demo under linux I want to try out Gmap stuff.

Gmap and G2XPL are the same as Tileproxy, they do not generate elevated buildings.
To generate elevated buildings from the OSM Database you need OSM2XP.

Please be aware that OSM building coverage outside of Europe is very poor.
If you do not see buildings in your area you can either:
1) take the time to add some buildings yourself by going to Openstreetmap.org, register, and use the online editor to manually trace outlines of buildings
or
2) wait for someone else to add them ...

There is currently no program for X-Plane which will auto-trace and extrude buildings in ortho-photos

The maps you create are just text and image files that get placed in a folder. There is no executable generated. So yes you can use the maps you generate on a different OS.

Please note what I had said earlier about X-Plane Demo builds after 10.04, your scenery might not work since I believe they disabled the Custom Scenery folder very recently for Demo users. Before you run off half-cocked, fail, and come running back here complaining that your not seeing anything, please check and make sure that you can see custom scenery in the first place.

I just watched the videos in the last few pages, and I'm quickly turning into an X-Plane believer. The one with the low clouds mingling with the nighttime skyline was just unreal! I'm not ready to buy just yet, but man oh man, am I tempted! I live just south of Tacoma in the burbs, but work just south of Seattle, and I have to say the night lighting is spot on! Seeing the residential housing so close to the urban areas, and along I-5 is still a bit jarring, but the improvements over the default (based on the demo) are staggering.

I work across from the Museum of Flight by Boeing Field, and would love to see a low and slow pass along that area in the next demo vid, if I can make a request. :) Excellent work, gentlemen!
I'm a proud employee of the Boeing Company, and given the nature of our hobby, I may be inclined to post something related to my work. Anything I offer up in these forums in reference to Boeing is my opinion and does not necessarily reflect the opinions, practices, or philosophy of the Boeing Company.

... Are you are using the X-Plane 10 demo or the full retail version? If you are using the full retail version just make sure you also have opensceneryX installed.

Hi

I have just found this thread and started reading, I have learnt more about scebnery building in the last half an hour than in all my previous years of using flight sims. My xplane full copy should arrive today (amazon get your act together) the thing is the thread starts with you all talking about XP8, I assume that all of the discussion is relevant to XP10.

Also is all this wealth of knowledge placed in one easy to find location. Such as X-plane.org.

I hope to join the ranks of designers soon, and start with my home city and airport in Cardiff, Wales.
