AOTD for 4/9/13...Mokuaikaua

Recommended Posts

Mokuaikaua christian church, on the big island. A lot of interesting early Hawaiian history here.

This is a big resort area, isn't it? So, I put the Icon down on the water and went for a swim.

No, Steve, I didn't forget the gear. I hauled the Icon up on the beach so the waves wouldn't wash it out to sea!

Best regards.

Luis, land on the water then pull up right to the edge of the water, lower the landing gear and taxi up onto the beach. It's much easier on the bottom of your plane!

I got it from the air after doing some touch and goes at the old Kona airport on the way. On the way back I did some sightseeing and made a stop a the very tiny Kaupuleho airstrip 92Z before returning to the new Kona International airport  at Keahole. Nice flight. I do well remember flying low over those extensive lava flows during the approach as a passenger on an inner-island commercial flight.

Thanks, Alan, I've been repainting lately and have got lots of extra cans of paint lying around for scraped bottoms!

Best regards.

Hi Folks

An unexpected and pleasant surprise this evening.

One of those AOTD's I'd missed first time round,

and my first new AOTD in 5 months of waiting.

Flew in Heavy Weather at dusk,

which made for a visually impressive, albeit brief flight,

there & then back to landing at Kona Intl.

Took 3 attempts, as it's location was unknown to me.

Initial pass to localize,

then on return, missed as too high,

finally a low-level from seawards yielded.

Now acquired 339 of 350 Aerocaches.

4 of those outstanding were since made permanent,

which I've stashed/am saving, for a rainy day.

Been working in FSX recently,

and one forgets how atmospheric & immersion enhancing the lighting makes Flight.

Must do some/more flying to raise availability of clandestine jobs.

AUGGG, still at 343 and checking every day. I know I missed a bunch when I was on vacation last year. It is so distressing to see that you have already bagged that AOTD. Funny how you can miss the  hunt. Something that so many "serious simmers" found so juvenile.  Just think, the Grand Canyon area was to have been next!

I wonder which one I might have missed then. I've found every AOTD posted since the beginning, and I only have 349 in my count. As a matter of fact, I think that number agrees with several other people I've seen mention their count.

Interesting. I wonder if I might have missed one when the daily postings were messed up and occasionally two were posted on the same day?

Guess I'll have to check each day also.

Thank you.

Hi Folks

Rick -

The official MS published figure for available Aerocaches is 350.

The only source I've managed to find for a total available Aerocache's is -

If you join any multiplayer session,

then look at any other participating player's profile,

you'll see their earned versus total available AOTDs.

AIUI -

That total available Aerocaches was originally 351.

One that many people hadn't earned is - Curvature of the Earth

Ethically avoided on my own part.

IIRC it doesn't count in the 350,

as the total available Aerocaches was decremented when it was withdrawn.

ISTR a thread on this forum when it was decremented.

Does that 350 count all that were submitted by the community. I alone added 25 or so before we were cut off at the knee's. Of course not all that were submitted were even used. I had some really good ones that never saw the light of day. So be it!

I don't know what I could possibly be missing.

I too didn't try for the curvature cache. Just didn't seem right to do it the way that was suggested.

Steve - I'm sure the 350 must include some of the community submitted caches as I have all those also. They are included in my 349 count.

Just out of curiosity, where was the official total posted by Microsoft? Or, was this just for people on the development or beta teams?

Thank you.

Hi Folks

Rick -

The official count of 350 can be seen

if you join any multiplayer session,

you'll see their earned versus total available AOTDs.

I know of at least 2 persons whose profiles indicate they've earned all 350 aerocaches.

I have a count of 349 Aerocaches and in compeering your list to mine, I show you missing.

  1. Between Upolu Point and Kamuela VOR's
  2. (Iditarod 17), is Kaltak and is listed as “Iditarod Trail – Kaltag”
  3. KA LAE
  4. Komohio Bay
  5. Lao Valley
  6. Willow, is listed as Iditarod Checkpoint 2 - Willow

You have these on your list that I have no reference of.

  1. Kaho'olawe Light
  2. Makapuu Light
  3. Nawiliwili Light
  4. Seasons of Change: Part 1
  5. Seasons of Change: Part 2

Hi Folks

jpc55 -
Cheers for your info.

Sorry for the tardy reply,

further delayed by AVSIMs latest outage.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

re: The mismatches you've listed -

Apart from a few of those I've missed earning,
the spelling of the aerocache names in my list,
were extracted directly from Microsoft Flight's aerocache http source,
on the day the aerocache was published.

My List == Your list
1 - Kamuela and Upolu VOR == Between Upolu Point and Kamuela VOR's
3 - Ka Lae == KA LAE
4 - Kamohio Bay == Komohio Bay
5 * - Iao Valley == Lao Valley
6 - Iditarod Checkpoint 2 - Willow == Willow

5 * -
Iao Needle would have been a more appropriate name.

Iao Valley being the name of the area, which contains ‘Iao Valley State Monument national park.
The Iao Needle is a topographic feature situated up a minor side stream of the Iao Valley.

The AOTD is located between Iao Needle, and the main valley wall.
IIRC, the display trigger has a fairly small area, (i.e. you need to be close before it shows).

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iao_Valley
http://www.nature.nps.gov/nnl/site.cfm?Site=IAVA-HI
http://www.hawaiistateparks.org/parks/maui/index.cfm?park_id=36

Cheers for the info on the following pair
both of which don't match the naming convention used for others in the series.

2 - My list wrongly includes "Iditarod 17",
which I'd wrongly thought I'd missed whilst away from home.
The published name is "Iditarod Trail – Kaltag", (already in my list).

6 - "Iditarod Checkpoint 2 - Willow", (already in my list).

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

re: Those you'd no record of -

AFAICS they were initially published as follows -

09/08/2013    Kaho'olawe Light
04/08/2013    Makapuu Light
11/08/2013    Nawiliwili Light
18/08/2013    Seasons of Change: Part 1
20/08/2013    Seasons of Change: Part 2

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

re: Master Listing -

So my incomplete listing is now reduced to 346 valid aerocaches, (347 inc CotE).
i.e. I'm still short of 4 names.

? Anyone ?
