Giving a shout out to the new Cliffs of Dover

Recommended Posts

Like a lot of people I drifted away from IL2 Cliffs of Dover a while back because I wasn't too happy with some of the visuals / sounds. Had a peek back at it recently and there seems to have been a magic-touch patch which has made a huge difference.

Some fantastic visual effects (the best sea, sun and cloud effects I've seen so far in a flight sim), good sounds, (apparently) realistic flight and damage models, smooth as silk multiplayer (at least on the popular ATAG server) - in short a really rewarding game and strongly recommended if you're into combat sims or just flying warbirds:

In an interview, long long ago, the designers said the sim was designed to be very expandable. It it really is fixed at last, I could easily imagine an addon market growing for it, in time.

It is simply remarkable what ATAG has achieved here. When this sim was released it was a huge disappointment, but now is right up there with the all time best combat sims. Incredible.

Haven't booted this up for a while but as it's not an official patch (the group who made the original sim no longer exists) it may only be available from Team Fusion's website:

Do read the installation guide carefully as it's a bit complex. Good to see that they are still working on new goodies. The latest bump-mapping on the skins looks excellent.

Thanks for the info. I had looked at this long ago and wrote it off. Love WW2 sims but it has been a while since I played a dedicated WW2 theater.

Mind if I pick your brain?

Does it have clickable cockpit? Startup procedures? Or is it a press E to start type thing.

I see advantages to both ways and would like those clicks and startup but also could be fun (for once) to hop in and go.

Love DCS A10 and P51 but might be time to concentrate on dog fighting and nothing else.

Looks like COD can have 100 players....WOW that would be a blast.

Oh yeah does TrackIR work also?

Yes to clickable cockpit but not everything is clickable. Lights, targetting ranges, prop angle, mixture, throttle, flaps, gears etc. are all adjustable in the VC. Flight and damage models are supposed to be very accurate so you'll need to know your plane's engine / temperature tolerances etc. or you'll either end up with oil all over your canopy or a blown engine.

Having said that most planes start up very simply (as a fighter needs to do) and you can be up in the air within 5 minutes.

It's really quite a blast...

No it is a community patch and you'll need to download it and follow the instructions from the link I put above.

There's a new patch inbound though which will add some gorgeous effects. I mean for flip's sake, will you look at this work of art?!

SOLD! Thanks Stephen. Maybe we will fly the vintage skies as wingmen one day.

I was just reading the ATAG forum. They seem like really nice and logical.

The sim looks great I will give it a few flights next week.

The video you posted back in May really does have incredible ocean graphics.  Would love to see that in a civilian sim.

Best "sim"on the market.

The realism has scalability ; spins can be tricky without some altitude.

Bought the boxed edition about a year ago.

I was worried my old nail would run it like a slide show. Also I found the combat in previous IL 2 SIMS not involving. (With exception to the first)

Its fabulous once you give it some effort.

Its up there with janes ww2 fighters and might alley and ROF.

I will be looking into community mods next week.

Never been online with this;had a negative experience flying ROF online. That put me off not having track ir can be a big disaster online with mid air collisions.

Not the sort to intentionally spoil someone else's fun.

Scotch egg is absolutely correct about COD.

The feel is there with aircraft.

WhoW!

Why can we find these superb graphics and flight dynamics ** ONLY ** on combat flightsims? Why are they always so much ahead of the best we have for civil flight simulation?

This will always puzzle me :-/

Thx for the great movie!
