Check the NGX Tutorial, it takes you through it step by step.  The Introduction will help you to select different equipment for different Autoland capabilities though if you're a casual pilot or just learning you don't need to be concerned with that at this point.

I think you need to start at least one more thread about the autoland to get a proper answer.

I found the tutorials confusing because they use vnav and I only use lnav, and it's quite different

It does not matter how you get to the point where you press APP button, the important thing is to be at the right position and altitude - able to capture localizer before glideslope.

Stop being lazy and expect people to spoon feed you the info read the manuals and do the tutorials
It's really not that hard if you do them all

Actually, Autoland has nothing to do with LNAV or VNAV.  I disagree that Vertical Navigation (VNAV) is difficult, it's actually very simple.  Just give the manual a read through a few times before you fly, and you'll quickly understand it.

That said, neither LNAV or VNAV have anything to do with Autoland. I recommend going to the Autoland part of the Tutorial and start from there. You can initiate either an ILS or Autoland approach from the Heading Mode, never engaging LNAV.

Hope this helps.

Just curious and not at all judgmental - why would you not use VNAV?

Not sure who you're asking, but I'll happily reply.

First:  My suggestion was for the OP not to use VNAV was 2 fold.  1) His question was about Autoland, which has nothing to do with VNAV, and 2) He said he was confused by VNAV and when helping someone in this type of venue it's more conducive to resolving/explaining things one item or step at a time.

To answer your specific question (why would one not use VNAV) I can think of many reasons, but in my case I do, but as I am often under ATC control I rarely use VNAV for descent. This is the same in the real world as well. VNAV climb is a different matter and is situational under ATC control. Certainly don't have to take my word for it. Lots of real world pilots about, or Google will also provide the same (look for it at Airliners.net).

Hope this helps answer your question my friend!

It was for the OP.

Also, I understood that the tutorial was confusing because he doesn't use VNAV. I was just curious what would be the reason not to use it as a matter of principle. There are many valid reasons to turn it off during various stages of flight, but I didn't quite get his…
