FSGRW with REX textures weird double clouds

Recommended Posts

I use FSGRW for my weather but have REX textures, I love FSGRW because it's so darn accurate the problem is that sometimes I get these weird double cloud textures. My guess is that FSGRW is asking for a very thin cloud layer and that it's smushing REX's big fluffy cumulus clouds but I've tried several different cloud textures in REX with similar results. Below is a comparison of FSGRW and REX weather generation in the same area. While REX looks better when looking up the actual METAR and weather report in the area I found that FSGRW's interpretation was much closer to reality. Any suggestions on what I could do with my REX textures or settings to make this look better? Also you may notice this white blob of haze that follows my aircraft around at cloud level in both photos, any ideas on what that is?

I haven't found a perfect solution yet, but in FSGRW - Tools | General Settings - Weather Depiction Realism -- move this slider to the left and it will adjust the Stratus to Cumulus cloud ratio.

In REX OD, I'm using Cumulus 34 for Cloud Textures and Hawaii OD for Sky Textures.  In REX options I'm using 2048 3D clouds and 2048 for Cirrus Clouds and Cloud Textures (cumulus and cirrus) are selected.  In the REX configuration manager Clouds tab, Cumulus Definition = Fluffy, Stratus Definition = Stable, Cumulonimbus Definition = Anvil ... but I'm not sure these are relevant since I think these are specific to REX Weather engine?

You could also try WX Textures in REX to load up the textures that match the local weather, then use FSGRW for the weather.

That strange 'pattern' is simply showing the region size drawback with the weather theme way of weather injection. In REX we have a mode called STANDARD, which doesn't utilize the weather theme injection method.

problem is that sometimes I get these weird double cloud textures.

Although we have code in REX to try and quash this FSX bug, it happens with all weather engines at times. This has nothing to do with textures. I can't speak for the other weather engine workings... might be best to ask the developer.

Yes, in REX there is a feature called "Enable Realistic Haze Layer", and on page 27 of the REX User Manual it states "In IFR conditions, this will help immersion. This setting will create hard edges when fog intersects with terrain, and causes a ‘cloud-type’ formation to follow the aircraft." Nothing we can do about that, it's the way FSX handles this. Simply CLOSE FSX, then disable this setting in REX.
