FSX crash with NGX

Recommended Posts

Hello everybody !

I know that you've already seen this kind of problem more than once, but i really tried a lot of things with this one, and nothing has actually solved my problem. It would be very kind of you if you could help me with it ! I hope it will be helpfull !

So let's start this story ! I bought the 737NGX from PMDG one year ago, and since that day, nothing is the same. I fly on IVAO since a long time (2005) and my FSX never crashed before. 90% of my flights with the NGX crashed during the descent, in final approach or in cruise. These crashes simply stop my FSX with a CTD, then "FSX doesn't respond anymore" and eventually, I have to close it myself, by ending the process. This usually happens when I try to do something in the Virtual Cockpit, while i'm preparing the descent.

As said above, I have already tried a LOT of things and tweaks and I made a list :

- uiautomationcore.dll

- FSUIPC install (http://forum.avsim.net/topic/355100-g3ddll-workaroundfix-to-prevent-fsx-crashes/)

- Install and run FSX and NGX as an admin

- Format my disk and do a clean Windows 7 64bits and FSX installation

- Use the NGX without any other add-on

So after a long time of research, I'm asking myself if it could be a problem with my Hardware, but my PC is not that bad, I think. I will post my config and my fsx.cfg this afternoon. As for the APPCRASH event, I will post it ASAP.

A friend also told me that my FSX Installation CD could be corrupted and installs not correctly the sim. Do you think this is possible ?

Please do not hesitate to ask any questions you need !

I really hope you will help me to solve that big problem of mine, because the NGX is a great add-on and because I really miss flying smooth and stable !

Thanks in advance for your help and I wish you all a good day !

There are two versions of UIAutomationcore.dll around to help W7 with FSX. Which one is your version number? And where did you place the dll file? (should be the FSX root folder) And has it been renamed to read exactly "UIAutomationcore.dll"?

Do you hear any "pings" before your sim freezes? (the sim slowly running out of Virtual Address Space) Can you state the VAS usage before the freezes? (download Process Explorer from microsoft.com to measure VAS)

Any rebuilds of your fsx.cfg? HIGHMEMFIX=1 is still an entry in your cfg?

After reinstalling FSX, did you apply the two FSX servicepacks (SP1 + SP2)? Or, alternatively, the Acceleration pack?

Hi Olli,

thank you for your really quick answer !

The only answer I can give you right now is about the two Service Packs. I have installed them.

My UIAutomationcore.dll is in FSX root folder.

I will give you further informations as soon as I get home.

Thanks again,

Sincerely yours,

Grégory Scyboz

EDIT : No, I don't hear pings before the crash.

The Uiautomationcore.dll will not fix your problem.  It only fixes menu crashes.  Nothing else.  It is not the holy grail of fixing FSX crashes.  It would be nice to see the AppCrashView report but it is a well-known fact that FSX will run out of VAS after long flights if you have your settings set too high PLUS you have a lot of addon scenery enabled, especially photoscenery, and you are running a commercial weather program.  To reduce the chances for crashes, you need to enable only the addon scenery you will be using for a flight plan.

Actions to take to prevent crashes -

Update Drivers – Microsoft does an excellent job providing updates for Windows and some drivers, such as for your keyboard, mouse, and video card.  But they do not find updates for drivers required for computer system stability.  Usually, the manufacturer of your computer, like Dell or Hewlett Packard will provide you updates for some of the hardware installed on your computer.  You should also download and run a program that will scan your computer for updated drivers.  These drivers will be updates for your CPU, your motherboard, USB ports, SSD’s, HDD’s, printers, etc.  There are several commercial developers who have programs that will scan your system.  Just Google or Bing Drivers or Driver Updates and you will get a list of programs you can download and run.  The programs are freeware but, when drivers are found to be out-of-date, they will ask you to pay a small registration fee to download and install the updates for you.  You can either pay or you can get the name of the out-of-date driver from the list provided by the driver scanner program and then go to Google/Bing and search for the updated driver. Once found, you can download and install the driver yourself.  Manufacturers constantly update drivers when they find issues with previous versions and it is one of the best things you can do to help maintain system stability.

Update Your Motherboard BIOS – Make sure the Motherboard BIOS is up-to-date.  The latest can usually be found on the Motherboard developer’s website, like ASUS, Gigabyte, Intel, Dell, or Hewlett Packard.  Do not automatically update the BIOS.  Look at what the update will provide.  If it says it increases system stability, you should definitely install it.

Update Microsoft Visuals - Make sure your Microsoft Visuals are installed properly and up-to-date. Microsoft Visuals are used by developers to make sure their software is installed properly and as intended.  FSX/P3D/FS9 and most commercial add-ons will install the appropriate version when you first install the product if it is not already found on your system.  For FSX/Acceleration (and most likely P3D), you will need to have the latest Microsoft Visual 2005 with SP1. SP1 was to be included with Acceleration but did not make it before the product was released.  For FSX commercial add-ons you will need the latest version of Microsoft Visual 2008 and Microsoft Visual 2010.  Microsoft has set up a website where you can download and install the latest versions - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2019667. It is important to note that Microsoft Visuals are not, for the most part, backward compatible.  Only the 32-bit version is required as FSX and P3D are 32 bit applications.  Microsoft Update or a 64 bit application may install the 64 bit versions but they will not be used by FSX/P3D.  FS9 users will have the latest Microsoft Visual runtime version installed when FS9 is first installed.  However, FS9 add-ons may require later versions so we recommend you install the above Microsoft Visuals to ensure compatibility.

Make sure required Microsoft.net Framework Packages are installed and up-to-date - The appropriate Microsoft.net Framework packages are normally installed when you first install FSX/Acceleration/P3D and commercial add-on programs if the appropriate package is not found.  You will need versions 1.1 through the latest. You can see what versions are installed by going to Windows/Microsoft.net/Framework/(then the versions installed). Once the packages are installed, Windows Update will periodically update the packages.  You can verify whether your versions are properly installed and up-to-date by using the .Net Framework Setup Verification Tool User's Guide.  Microsoft.net packages are used by developers to make sure the program runs in the way they intended, including memory management. The packages are, for the most part, not backward compatible.

Increase Heap Limitation – There is a problem sometimes with Windows 7 users when too many Windows are open.  This may cause an out-of-memory (OOM) crash.  It is caused because of the desktop heap limitation.  Here is the link to the Microsoft Fix-It program that will increase your desktop heap limitation: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947246. This may or may not work with Windows 8.1 as it has not been tested.

Install Scenery Config Editor – Download and install the Scenery Config Editor tool.  You can use this tool to install or remove your add-on scenery.  It will look for any errors in your scenery.cfg and fix them.  You can rearrange the order of the scenery instead of moving scenery up or down in the Scenery Library.  Most importantly, you can use this tool to disable all of your FSX/FS9 add-on scenery and enable only the scenery you will be using during a flight plan. This will reduce your chances of running out of memory because you ran out of Virtual Address Space (VAS).

Best regards,

The API.dll is the module that makes FSX run and that's what was listed as the faulting module.  It indicates you are very, very close to an Out-of-Memory (OOM) crash.  It indicates one or more FSX settings is set too high.  Follow my advice above PLUS check out the new AVSIM Basic FSX/P3D/FS9 Configuration Guide V2.  A link to the guide is in my signature.

Definitely, your Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 is out of date.  That alone may not be causing your crash but some apps look for certain versions.

It seems good so far, but I just don't understand what should I install for Visual Studio ?

The 2008, 2010 or 2012 edition ?

What about the Redistributable Packages ?

Thanks a lot for your help !

As I posted above: "For FSX/Acceleration (and most likely P3D), you will need to have the latest Microsoft Visual 2005 with SP1. SP1 was to be included with Acceleration but did not make it before the product was released. For FSX commercial add-ons you will need the latest version of Microsoft Visual 2008 and Microsoft Visual 2010." Microsoft Visuals are also often called Microsoft Visuals C++ 2005 Redistributables. I just shortened it to Microsoft Visual 2005, etc.

There is nothing in your crash report that tells me what might have caused the crash.  You had a Buffer Exception Overrun (BEX) type of crash which indicates issues with lack of sufficient memory.  This could be high settings, a memory leak, lots of things.  I don't own the Berlin or Zurich Aerosoft sceneries but some are not framerate friendly and any high fsx/display driver settings could cause a crash.  I would disable the sceneries and try again but with default sceneries (I know yuck!).  If there is not crash then it is one or both of the sceneries causing your crashes.

Hi,

I will try it tonight...

What do you mean by lack of sufficient memory ? Is it an Hardware issue ? Aren't my 8GBs RAM enough ? Or is it because I have too many applications running at the same time ? Could it be a problem with my config ?

Thanks for your help,

Grégory Scyboz

I found it on internet : http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_other-windows_programs/problem-event-name-bex-error-message/cf5baf73-0877-4070-abfb-a2c3a17a9e10

"right click on my computer

go to properties

click on advanced system settings

under performance, click settings

click the Data Execution Prevention tab, and then click Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select.

click Add, browse to the executable file for the program and add it."

Could it really solve the BEX problem ?

Best regards,

Grégory
