Xperimental 2 - Gibraltar

Recommended Posts

Touring Gibraltar and the coast of Spain aboard a Cessna CT210 Centurion II. X-Plane 10 has amazing capabilities that we've just begun tapping into. There's certainly more to come.

Hi Michael, so what is the scenery? It looks photoreal but with autogen...

Hi Howard,

The scenery, like you guessed, is photoscenery from simheaven.com. X-Plane has the ability to overlay photoscenery with autogen and OSM data, giving very natural and life-like results. Add to this the art controls we can tweak and the results are quite convincing.

These look extremely realistic, especially the feeling of having actual air surrounding the plane. Fading and colour gradation are very convincing, not like a lot of other sim experiences where it seems as if there were no atmosphere.

Hi Sacha,

Yes, as you noted, atmosphere is very important in order to convince the user and trick the eye into believing you are at altitude.

So how much scenery of this quality is it possible to create? Is the photoscenery readily available with the corresponding OSM data, or is it only available for limited areas? Cheers...

The real problem is storing the scenery. There are terabytes worth of scenery at the moment. Each tile (1 ° X  1°) can weigh in at + 6 gigabytes. Europe has the best coverage as far as OSM and photoscenery are concerned.

There are different levels of detail available. For general aviation, go with the ZL17 tiles. If you prefer commercial aviation, go with the lesser detail LZ16 tiles. At altitude, the difference would be negligible and you'll save on download size, as the largest files are less than 2 gigabytes. I hope this helps a little.

cheers
