Going Home after the Race

Recommended Posts

Gents,

It seems like every year when the race ends all I want to do is go home. Get there, rest, relax, have a night cap etc..

Every year I do do it. It could be months later etc.. This time I did not forget about the pertinent things. Other years just about all was just about lost. (Duenna records, pics etc..)

The flight itself had some hiccups. I started off leaving URSS going in the wrong direction, on purpose. Took the 777 into a polar route trying to take advantage of the so called "Polar Vortex" going west --> east. Didn't work. The flight itself went well at first. Double, triple & over again, checked everything since I had to leave for work. Coming home for lunch I noticed that all was not well. The FMC had "discoed" and went direct KGRB for some odd reason. I had over 25 lat/lon waypoints in the FMC to make sure magdev and all the other goodies were kept in check while in the upper latitudes . Lunch was spent doing fuel calcs , plan confirmations etc.. Just cleared the disco and went for it, plenty of fuel. Went back to work hungry.

These shots are in FS9.

Leaving Sochi with a full load of Olympic participants it was heard over the comm - "Где, что парень собирается? О чем он думает? Америка является то, что путь! Он должен быть из Висконсина."

Just a slow climb for the passengers to have a "look see" from up above. Just enough climb to clear the Caucasus'.

Made it over the tops.

Over middle Russia along the route. Where? Dunno. The clouds are cool.

2 Hours after departure, over the mid part of Russia.. Just a nice picture.

After this was this was lunch & the big debacle of "Going Home" after the RTWR. ( No more Cyrillic :) )

Now, around 11.5 + hours after departure coming down from "up north" crossing through the Northwest Territories & parts of Nunavut, Mother Nature showed her hand.. It was a beautiful night.

Coming into America and into northern Michigan I knew that the weather was going to be factor landing in Green Bay. Shoot... All I had to do was look out the "real" window. Wouldn't even want to drive in this crap. Winds were crazy, rain, sleet, snow, back to rain, ice,  no vis. etc.. Just all wrong. As I broke out over Oconto, WI heading for initial approach point over the bay of Green Bay I noticed  that the WX engine hasn't updated yet. (lucky me)  The real crap didn't show up, but the winds did! Cocked that big bird sideways all the way in! After nearly 14 hours of flight one does not want to crash.  (Invalidate Duenna)

Now that I made it home, had a few night caps 'n such, the Paralympics are over, it's time to do it again. This time in the Concorde in 2 legs, bringing the Paralympians home.
