What can Brown...wait...When it positively has to be there overnight

Recommended Posts

Sorry guys...painting so many freighters it's hard to keep track of them all! :Silly:

Anyway, like the FedEx brand slogan says...this one will fit the bill...Sunday delivery even (well...that is up to the Library mods.  )

This is Steve's workshop....

And since this one is in rapid development, it may not qualify for the Check Airman program.  By the time I send out the contracts, wait for the certified return receipt, deliver the airframe...it may already be in the library.  :LMAO:   We'll see.

Here is some detail, and the lengths I go through to get it right (and debunk the 12 year olds that email me telling me something's 2 pixels off )...yep, have gotten those emails.  I just find it easier when doing a real livery vs a fictional one to post some shots of the work in process to refer them back to if they insist they are right...hehe.

777FedEx2.jpg

You'll see I used the ports and wing inspection light from a real photo to align the text precisely.  Then the 2 access panels under the "SS" on the other side, and the port next to the bottom of the "P".

I got the color map off the official FedEx site..so the colors are as good as they'll get.  Its funny when someone emails me and says its too dark or light.  They completely ignore the fact the text is wrapped around a 3 dimensional tube with a gradient darkness or lightness depending on where you're looking at the color.  I know...kids...who just want to be right-fighters...I've seen 'em all.

Hehe...the result of debunking folks that want to argue about a few pixels...a pretty nice repaint for the community. :P (OK..maybe I obsess a little)

But  I want to get this one right...FedEx has a huge following, and I happen to fly her as well...2 important factors on how much time I'll spend getting it as perfect as I can.

Looks good Steve....what's the planned reg number?

Don't worry about your lack of hours not flying as I'm doing that for you

Hehe thanks Chris, yeah I'll climb in the cockpit when I get a few more paints out (famous last words) LoL.

Right now I'm looking at N889FD.  If you have another preference let me know.  If its a standard FedEx livery I'll switch her.  No Panda or other specials. LoL

Love those famous last words  Good on the reg....just wanted to make sure you didn't use a reg that was already on the PMDG FedEx paints mistakenly.  I looked and 889FD is a beaut (here she is brand new at Paine)

Here is that gradient I was referring to.  Its one of those things, that if I didn't show you what I was doing, you'd look at the plane and say..."It just looks more realistic, but I can't tell you why." Hehe...that's the whole point.  If the painter is taking into consideration all the elements that effect what the plane actually looks like in a true 3D world, it just "looks right" to your eye...but you'll never know what he/she did to achieve that effect.  :P   Well now you do..at least for gradients simulating wrapping text around a tube.

And before the other painters who may comment on how you can take care of that by moving the text under the master gradient map for the whole fuse...been there, done that, not completely happy with the actual effect you "see" in FSX.  It's not as pornounced as my eye thinks it should be, so I create a custom gradient for certain features on the fuse and manually adjust by going back and forth between the 2d map and FSX.  A little tedious, but the result is worth it.

More to come guys...Just in case you're interested in how us painters do it.   (Oh, and I applied that same gradient on the red alignment stripes by the front door...but at around 23%, as its closer to the bottom of the fuse....darker down there ya know...unless you're flying inverted...then I can't help ya!  )

Oh yeah that is a standard item on my checklist...painting a different reg...unless its a case of what Richard S and I are doing at the moment with AA....painting the same reg (by total coincidence) but I'm doing metal on PMDG and he's doing the new paint (One World) on the CS model.

Yeah that pic really shows her off....quite the beauty. :)

I know now to keep my mouth shut

Naw....never hurts and I'm never offended when my check airmen are making sure I follow the checklists.

I've made some goofy blunders over the years...and one in the real SH-3 Seaking one day when I was distracted for just a moment while performing a before-start checklist.

I was dual-engine turn qualified, I believe one of the few (if any other) Avionics Techs in the Navy that held that qualification.  The story goes (oh no....ANOTHER sea story!...ROFL!)

I was on a small detachment (det) where we typically deployed a maintenance crew of about 15 and 4 pilots (2 crews) on the back of a frigate or destroyer (small boys as we called them in Navy slang...but we also called frigates "Friggin Frigates" hehe...amongst other names I'll refrain from in this public forum).

Anyway, when the mechs or metalsmiths had to turn the bird, they had to get a pilot because they had to work on the system and couldn't be sitting in the pilot seat while doing that. (makes sense).  So...as an avionics tech...when my equipment was working, I was helping the other rates with their stuff (I've changed many engines, hydraulic pumps, rotor blades, greased the main rotor head more times than I care to recall, etc.  When you're on a det, you cross train and learn everyone else's job...a necessary evil.)

So wanting to get out of greasing the rotor head (my real motivation, hehe), I thought wouldn't it be better if I take the pilot's place so we didn't have to drag him out of his bunk at 2 am when we needed a maintenance turn.  I pitched the idea to my det oink (actually OINC which stands for Officer in Charge), who was bleary-eyed after a long mission and woke up 3 hours later because we needed that turn.

He said..."Great idea Drabek...we'll make it happen when we get off this det."  Long story short (as short as Steve's get, hehe), I got qualified and was used extensively after that. (and actually got a medal for the idea and developing the program  )

So, back to the story about me getting distracted in the middle of the checklist.  I was in the cockpit, going thru the list, flipping switches, turning knobs..you know, the usual checklist stuff.  I got to the part where I check to make sure the normal and emergency throttles were free and not binding.  I get the normal ones complete, on the emergency ones...you push them all the way forward then back.  These levers basically dump fuel directly into the engine in case the normal ones quit.  Well....just as I push them forward I get tapped on the shoulder...a mech wants me to check something.  I do and get back to my checklist.

Don't think I have to say what happened next...but I forgot to pull the emergency throttles back and when the engine lit off...a 15 foot flame shot out the exhaust!  I laugh every time I think about it now, what the turn airman was thinking when he saw that.  I saw the reflection of the flame off his goggles, and could not figure out what that was, LoL.  Only took a second to realize and I shut down the engine before it was damaged (you monitor the T5 temp when starting keeping it below the redline and shutting down if it gets close...it go close!) Hehe.

Taught me a valuable lesson to never let anyone interrupt you in the middle of a checklist and if they do...start over from the beginning!

Ok enough sea stories...back to painting...I know there are a few FedEx fans out their waiting for something.....

Thanks Eric for the comments!

The jpeg compression kills the quality of the shots. :(  She looks great in FSX!

Actually, DHL was the very first to deploy the b772F.   They did it in a unique arrangement with Lufthansa.  They formed a JV called Aerologic.   Aerologic flies DHL parcel freight during the week and LH heavyweight air on the weekends to long range destinations.

Wow....its amazing the things you can learn here.  I've been thinking of doing Aerologic, but there are so many of them out there already, hehe.  Will be doing Lufthansa cargo though...that's for sure.  Thanks for the info E!
