New Windows 7 Install - Cannot Use Update Windows?

Recommended Posts

With P3Dv2.3 around the corner I decided to do some spring cleaning (well, summer cleaning), and prep also with a fresh install of my Windows 7 Ultimate 64.  After 4 years figured it was time to clean out the cobwebs!

So I have formated my new 256GB SSD just for the OS, performed the install of just the motherboard drivers so I have the LAN and such.  Also made sure Win7 was activated - no problem.  But when I try to use Windows Update I get a big red "X" and something to the effect the update services are not running.  But I checked and they are.  Even did a 2nd full format and install and have the same issue.

I'm searching the web but thought I would see if anyone else has come across this in the past.

Thx,

Clutch

Found my answer:

S for others down the road you might try the following:

Rename the Windows Update temporary SoftwareDistribution folder. To do this, follow these steps:

Open an administrative Command Prompt window.
Run the following commands, and press Enter after each command:

Net stop wuauserv
cd %systemroot%
Ren SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old
Net start wuauserv

Try to install updates again.

Or this -

  1. Disconnect external HDD if one is connected

  2. Click Start-->type msconfig in search box, press Enter

  3. MSConfig – General Tab: click Selective Startup, Uncheck Load Startup Items

  4. Services Tab: click Hide all Microsoft Services, Click Disable All

  5. Click OK – prompt to restart system

  6. Click Restart to restart system

  7. After restart, run Windows Update again – should install updates ok

  8. After restart, type mysconfig in search box, press Entter

  9. On General Tab: Click Normal Startup, click OK, Restart – system restarts with all normal settings.

I had this same problem on a brand new W7-64 system a couple of months ago, and these steps also worked.  So far no update problems since.
