Wow, nice free upgrade from my ISP - Astound 109 Mbps!

Not sure when this happened, but I thought I was only paying for max of 50 Mbps, but I guess I got upgraded:

 

109 Mbps Down and 9.6 Mbps UP

 

 

Not trusting a single source, I tried another independent web site:

If so, it has been said that the ISPs near Google Fiber networks have now begun the process of increasing speeds in order to retain customers that might otherwise switch to the much faster, more reliable Google Fiber network.

Did a quick check on the Google Fiber web site and it says no service in my area ... Astound is relatively new in terms of recent laying down of fiber cables in my area (East Bay - SF/Bay Area).  

 

But this is great speed jump ... prior to this upgrade on a good day we were around 30-40 Mbps, nice to see 109 Mbps now and 7ms latency ... and it didn't cost me any extra.

Verizon just made their FIOS service symmetric Download/Upload Speed. I just upgraded to the 75Mbps/75Mbps tier to get a free upgraded 802.11N router. (I currently only have a 802.11G router) To my knowledge they are the first to offer symmetric speeds at least here in the US. This is what I'm getting now!!

I just received an email from Comcast for a free upgrade* to my ancient cable modem that should allow me to at least double my current speeds:

 

30.03 download

6.09 upload

 

I checked several test sights and they all returned similar (within 1%) results.

Nice, Comcast recently did that as well.  I went from 50 to about 100mb.  Well, in theory at least.  Most everything that could actually use that including my desktop is connected via wi-fi until I get my new house wired up with cat-5.  I did plug my wife's laptop into the router once after they claimed to have doubled speeds though and sure enough they were about 100 slightly more (like 104 I think).  My desktop clocks in between 15-55ish when testing at Speedtest.net to various servers.  I think part of it is wi-fi interference and part is network congestion at peak times.  

 

Haven't been able to pin that part down though.  Sometimes my desktop at the other end of the house will get 15mb while my tablet in the living room right next to the router gets 50ish to the same server right after, then later at night the desktop is working fine which is why I suspect interference.
