Should I switch from 3 monitors to a 49 or 55 inch 4k monitor?

I'm considering ditching my 3-23 inch screen nVidia Surround setup for P3D and substituting in a 49 or 55 inch Sony 4k monitor. I'd appreciate any thoughts from anyone who's made such a switch, or considered it but decided to stick with 3 monitors. I'd also appreciate some input on the relative merits of the 49 v. the 55 inch size. I plan to look into the 2 sizes tomorrow at Best Buy if they're on display, but some practical input with use in P3D would be most helpful.

About a year ago I replaced my 3x 26" by 3x 32" .

No 55" can give you the feeling of that wide view.

 

However, performance will be better.

I agree with Gerard - sticking with 3 monitors is probably a better idea at the moment for now as coming off a 3 screen display to single screen (even at 49/55 inches) will probably feel smaller.

 

3 x 49inch 4K displays on the other hand.....

I recently went form 3x24"s to one 48" 1080p TV and am not really missing the ultra wide feel.

It's more than made up for by the increase in vertical area and the absence of bevels.

Being 1080 I have to sit back a bit to avoid the pixels becoming too obvious.

With 4K, especially with a 55", you should be able to sit close enough to replicate almost the same

physical viewing angle you are currently getting with your 3x23s.

 

FPS performance will be worse with 4K, ie pushing 6MB Vs 8MB total screen resolution.

There is also the current 30Hz refresh rate limitation and lack of 4:4:4 colour

with most video card/4KTV set-ups.

Guys, thanks for the input. After more than 7 years using 3 screens I decided to give a single screen a try. Seven years ago, I went from an Apple 32 inch monitor to a 3 screen setup, which I've upgraded over the years, and felt fine about it. I was in full agreement with Gerard and 64Rules back then. This time around, however, I got myself a single 55 inch Samsung 4k curved monitor and couldn't be happier with the results. 

 

I sit 2 feet from the monitor and it's like being in a real cockpit. The panel is real-life size and I can read the gauges, which I couldn't do with 3-23 inch screens. TrackIR handles the peripheral vision that I'm losing. And the loss of panorama can be mitigated somewhat by zooming out when I just want to look around. Maybe using 3-28 inch 4k screens would have worked better for me than the 3-23 inch screens I was using. It was my backup setup if the single monitor didn't do it for me. But once experiencing the 55 inch 4k screen I didn't even want to bother with the hassle of trying out another setup. It completely overwhelmed me. I'm a happy camper.

A few of the local retailers here have the curved Samsungs

set up running their 4K demo video.

Must admit it is really stunning and the curve really does seem to give a subtle 3D effect.

 

Are there any HDMI2 ports on the Samsung's breakout box.

Also what is the Windows desktop like on it ie font legibility, mouse movement?

 

(You would need a Cray Computer to get 3X4K screens running )

gb, you must be looking at an older model. There was no breakout box involved with my monitor. As I understand it, it is an optional purchase for future use as standards develop. Samsung assures me that the HDMI ports on the monitor are 2.0. Interestingly, however, there is no mention of the type of HDMI ports in any of the published specs, and Samsung tech support refuses to email me a copy of whatever internal guide they're referring to when they confirm for me that the built-in HDMI ports are 2.0 and not 1.4. I've called them several times now, and all I get are assurances not to be concerned. But I would sure like to get something more definitive. Basically, what Samsung says is all their currently available 4k models have HDMI 2.0 ports. Not as comforting as I would like, that's for sure.

 

The Windows Desktop is no different than on my normal 23 inch monitors. Icons and fonts are about the same size and mouse movement is responsive and without trails. I am told, however, that a normal 4k monitor greatly reduces the size of icons and fonts and requires some tweaking in the Windows options for these characteristics. But this one was just fine right out of the box.

Yes checking website I see it's optional.

Most retailers here seem to be selling it as standard though.

If they had it you would think they would be boasting about it pretty loudly.

4k curved monitor does it mimic effect of 3 monitors be interesting. Price needs to drop some, but I think this is fad with curved monitors. Still think for xplane and fsx if curved monitor done right could eliminate one or two monitors. Even at 1080p if curved downscaled could have benefits.

I was thinking of purchasing Asus PB287Q montiro cuz it has a 4k resolution but it only has a 30hz refresh rate. Is there a big difference with a 60hz monitor? Also if I do opt to go with this 30hz monitor do I still need the 1/2 refresh rate setting on nvidia inspector?
