VAS usage improved in 2.5+

Recommended Posts

Just a casual observation - I have a flight plan from KBUR to KSFO using ILS 28R approach. Using the Carenado CIrtation 550, ASN and Orbx NCA - I have been unable to complete that flight without OOM using earlier versions.

Flew same flight, same conditions in 2.5+ and had a little over 250mb left according to FSUIPC when I parked and shut down.

Flight was smooth with no issues.

I flew the 550S for a long long time (in 2.5 beta) while I was programming my GoFlight gear (AP) ... just filled up with fuel and kept flying until I ran out ... I only used about 200-300MB for the entire journey.

Cheers, Rob.

This is good news to hear.  I have not yet loaded up 2.5 but am looking forward to doing so when I have the time.  So far it sounds like it is a pretty stable version with some good performance improvements.

It's working well for me now, and aircraft vehicle selection is alot better too.

One thing I noticed is a fairly large difference depending where you start the flight and selecting airport from the world menu.

Eg starting with default flight, if I select the 777 then moved to YSSY I will have 300mb less VAS at pushback compared to if I had made YSSY my default. So it's bad to load in at one place, then switch locations.

Its not a bug I think it's just that it's loaded 2 airports and 2 parts of the world. A shame it can't release the VAS though if it's 1000s miles away..

So to have 300mb extra VAS I'm saving the default flight at all my favourite airports. Then I only load P3D from the Fxml file and not the exe.

Correct, good idea to setup aircraft, location, time/season ... then save flight and exit P3D.  Double click the saved flight file (.fxml) ... associate the file extension to Prepar3d.exe if prompted.  This will save a good amount of VAS.

Cheers, Rob.

But does it also allow you to have specific graphic settings with the saved flight? I am not seeing any VAS improvement with the 777 doeing this btw. Also from the menu - loading a saved graphic setting does not always work. Sometimes i have to load the flight first and then load graphic settings from the inside display bar.

But P3DV2.5 is so great and so smooth that going back to FSX really is only for the NGX for me.

I am using 344.11. Works great in both FSX and 2.5

Btw. Bathymetry is supposed to be off says the PMDG introduction. Any VAS improvement with that?

I too am seeing very good VAS management with v2.5.  I flew from KMIA to SBGR (TAM8095) last night in the PMDG 773 with FTX Global, REX, and ASN (dodged a few thunderstorms on the way) with scenery sliders at default settings.  Departed KMIA with 1.7 GB of free VAS, flew the 8 hour flight, landed and taxied to gate at SBGR and had 1.45 GB of free VAS.

This is the tried and true way, if only a bit old-school. B)  Try SimLauncherX from Maarten Boelens - pretty steep learning curve, but I don't fly without it. Let's you set almost all states (airport, fuel, passengers, engines, etc) prior to launching P3D.

Highly recommended, and it has it's own sub-forum!

I'm a control freak, hate being insulated (or automated) from the details

Cheers, Rob.

EDIT: in some ways it's something I came away with from my years of auto racing ... for better or worse
