External view always at tail of aircraft

Recommended Posts

Since upgrading to FSI, I notice that every time that I go to external view (F11), the view is always at the tail of the plane, regardless of where I had the view set previously.   Previously, I could set a view, return to the cockpit (F9) and the go back (F11) and my last view would be preserved.

I do not have Live Camera enabled, since I do not use that feature.

Can you help?

Thanks

Forgot to mention, using v4.48.2

It's only Live Camera that changes or sets the view. Sounds like you have had LC enabled in the past so you are actually displaying the Opus custom external view. Try enabling Live Camera then after all aircraft CFG files have been modified disable Live Camera again. That should force the Opus external view to be removed from all cfg files and Opus will not be affecting the views at all.

Thanks for the quick response, Stephen.

This is strange. Actually I get the opposite reaction. When I turn Live Camera on, then my last view in F11 is retained. When I turn Live Camera off, then it goes to the tail view when switching to F11. Also, if I do not start FSI, then the last view in F11 is retained.

I must have missed something in your instructions.

That's because when you enable Live Camera the General DHM options are no longer in use, hence your option to enable General DHM for external, or custom, views is no longer applicable.

IIRC, when I had Dynamic Head Movement enabled is when F11 defaulted to the butt end. It did not seem to remember *any* setting from F9 or F11. So I turned it off, and all is well.

You only need to turn off the General DHM - Custom option as this is what is enabling DHM eye point control when you select a non VC or 2D view mode. Either turn off the General DHM - Custom option or enable Live Camera and decide where and when you want DHM on a view by view basis.

Just tried it and you are right, John.

Perhaps the solution is to turn off DHM and Live Camera, and turn on A2A Accu-Sim.

The Opus DHM is far superior to any other option, you just need to control when and where you want it active, either via the General DHM options without Live Camera enabled, or via your Live Camera views when it is enabled. Other solutions will simply reduce the level of realism OpusFSI can provide as its DHM is fully coordinated and supervised by the Live Weather Engine.

Of course if you have General DHM active then that explains everything. You only really need General DHM active for VC views and not for external views. DHM obviously adjusts the eye point (which cannot be read from inside the sim) so will make manual adjustments in the sim impossible. That's what Live Camera Control LCC is for. See the User Guide and Live Camera guide. Many people use dedicated GamePad Controllers to simplify LCC, I use a Sony DualShock 3 controller.

Stephen :-)

So simply turn OFF General DHM for your External views, enable it only for VC views.

DHM is far more realistic than AccuFeel or AccuSim !

Our DHM is all based on actual real world captured 3D accelerometer data, which is fully coordinated and supervised in real time by the Live Weather Engine showing all true forms of turbulent motion, at all altitude levels (e.g. Including CAT Clear Air Turbulence). AccuSim will never be able to do this as well as it will not be supervised by the weather engine, the LWE is the only software that truly knows the meteorological conditions surrounding your aircraft. The 'in sim' meteorological data is rather limited and crude in comparison.

Hence disable General DHM in External or Custom View modes.

You only want to enable the General DHM - VC Views option. Turn the other two General DHM options, 2D and Custom Views OFF.

Or better still enable Live Camera and make full use of Live Camera Control. Then you will be in full control of all your views and have full control over all DHM related movements fully coordinated with camera view changes and LCC eye point adjustments. You will also be able to make full use of the excellent Panning Sequences and if using P3D v2.4+ can use the ultra efficient OpusPDK Interface for eye point control instead of SimConnect.

Only that way, combining the LWE and LC with its real world DHM, can you maximise your realism in the sim.

Stephen :-)

Please remember though. There is NO provision in SimConnect for the software to 'remember' or even be aware of ANY 'in sim' view and eye point controls you make. It's impossible as absolutely no provision was made through SimConnect to know of any such 'in sim' eye point adjustments or zoom level changes. It's not a case of remembering anything as Opus is completely unaware of what you do. That's why you should use Live Camera and Live Camera Control, and for max realism and best DHM, combine these with the Live Weather Engine.

Hmmm. May have to read the manual on Live Camera Control...

Stephen,

Thanks for the follow up explanation.

Still missing something here.

That is exactly the way I had it set up.  I had ONLY DCM VC views turned on.  Everything else except "Enable Live Weather Engine" was turned off.  It still reverts to tail view.

Hi, John:

The whole reason for not having Live Camera enabled or having any desire to use it is because I don't want to have to read a manual just to go to external view.  That is not how I fly, except occasionaly cheating when taxiing a tail dragger.  I also have no desire to get my butt kicked either, so that is turned off also.

Although it is obvious to Stephen that the two are interconnected, since he wrote the program, it was not obvious to me.

I bought FSI to use strictly as a weather engine.

The only reason I even messed with DHM VC is because I agree with Stephen that it is better than A2A Accu-Sim.

The tail view could well be the Opus Custom External Aircraft view. Hence my suggestion to enable and disable LC, to force that view removed from the cfg files. After restarting the sim the view will no longer exist.

Another thing to bare in mind. Eye point control can only work in VC, 2D, and 'Custom' view modes. It does not work or have any effect in tower view, spot plane view etc.. Hence its impossible to alter the view in these external view modes. In fact in ANY external view mode except a special Custom view, created for that very purpose. That's why Opus creates a custom external view (so does other Camera packages - which are NOT compatible). Without custom views it is not possible to have any effect on the external aircraft view at all.

Bottom line ... without a custom view it's not possible to have any effect on an external view. In VC view DHM will alter the eye point about the 000 reference point. If you turn off Bump Aircraft (recommended) then there will be no PBY control at all with DHM so the standard hat switch will be fully compatible (it only adjusts PBY).

I would of course strongly recommend you make use of LC and LCC, especially with the LWE as this affords maximum realism with the supervised DHM.

Remember ... virtually all in sim changes changes cannot be determined by Exetrnal software using SimConnect. This includes anything that alters the eye point, the zoom, or selects a specific external view. The sim does not allow any eye point changes to external views other than a created Custom view.

Again check the view type when you select an external view, if it's a custom view then it's eye point can be controlled. Also bare in mind what I keep saying. When you select one of the external views, Opus has no knowledge of this. But if you select say Spot Plane then Opus cannot alter its eye point anyway. It has of course adjusted DHM about the 000 reference point in the VC view beforehand though.

That's why it's always best to use LC and LCC. You only need to create a couple of standard 'All Aircraft' external views. Also DHM is better with LC than without it as you can tune it for your aircraft's VC views, using different light heavy settings as required.

LC also allows you to create the exact VC and panel views you need to fly the aircraft without any bother. I usually disable DHM on the panel close up views, something not possible with General DHM. I also use quick access Panning Sequences to perform look left/right procedures. AHM to auto look left and right whilst taxiing around a bend etc..

Nothing much I can do in General DHM mode though, as explained above, Opus is not informed about what you are doing with the sim controls most of the time, and such view changes cannot be monitored or determined.

From playing around, it looks like the only way to have DHM VC work AND not have default external tail view is to turn Live Camera on.  Cycling Live Cam on and off still resulted in default tail view if Live Cam was turned off and DHM VC is turned on, at least on my setup.  The trigger for default tail view is turning DHM VC on with Live Cam off.  With Live Cam and DHM VC off, everything is fine.  With Live Cam on everything is fine.

Is that the correct analysis, Stephen?

Sorry to waste your time on something like this.  You could be programming! :P

Certainly not a waste of time. Have a look in the top right hand corner when you select the external view, what does the view's title or description say?

Live Cam ON with no camera VC view defined is the same as having LC and General DHM off. In other words, nothing is happening. After cycling Live Cam on/off you will have to restart the sim or force a new flight to load so that the new cfg file is read in.

Stephen :-)

I wouldn't be programming as we are on holiday. :-)
