9th March 2015, Steam Edition update goes into open beta

Recommended Posts

I would do it but I am not proficient enough

Hi Mark,

Just a thought: I always end up learning much more creating vs. reading write-ups, because I do a lot a research to avoid looking like an idiot (although sometimes I look like one anyway  ).

Maybe you can do a joint effort with someone - you doing the initial write-up and someone else then reviewing/updating it.

Cheers!

Stevan

And it was all going so well with the FSX-SE install until ..... I tried to connect ASN from my other PC and did what the software advise ie. to run the installer ASConnect_FSX_Install.exe on the server computer. It BROKE the Steam FSX . I'll wait now until the morning to see what I need to do to repair the Steam installation.

I thought the idea was as follows:

1) Install FSX-SE into a new directory on your current FSX Drive (Could be another drive but this is the way I plan to do it).

2) Modify your current FSX scenery.cfg file so that you now have full paths including Drive.

3) Copy over the FSX scenery.cfg to FSX-SE.

4) In the aircraft.cfg file, point to the FSX simobjects/airplanes folder.

5) Copy over your FSX guages and modules folder.

6) Fly!

If you add any planes or scenery just add to the old FSX and update your scenery.cfg file in FSX-SE.

Yeah, but I took the longer route with the scenery and took the opportunity to clear out the hangar. It all went wrong when I tried to connect ASN ..... It broke FSX-SE.

Lets instead call it a temporary setback.  I can't tell you how many times I broke flight sim.....blue screens of death, no booting into windows, overclocking freezing,  overheated cpu due to water cooler failure, spilling water on the MB when fixing said water cooler problem.  This is a mere bump in the road.

2) Modify your current FSX scenery.cfg file so that you now have full paths including Drive.

3) Copy over the FSX scenery.cfg to FSX-SE.

Careful. Copy it from your ProgramData\Microsoft\FSX folder to the FSX-SE folder next door. It doesn't go into the FSX-SE folders in Steam.

4) In the aircraft.cfg file, point to the FSX simobjects/airplanes folder.

No!. Don't know where you got that from?. Don't touch any aircraft.cfg files. It's the FSX_SE.CFG file, in the AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\FSX-SE folder which needs editing.  Look for the SimObjects entries, make any of those you want to share full paths -- probably only the Airplanes one and maybe MyTraffic or other traffic folders.

5) Copy over your FSX guages and modules folder.

Don't forget the Effects folder.

If you add any planes or scenery just add to the old FSX and update your scenery.cfg file in FSX-SE.

If the Airplanes pointer in FSX_SE.CFG is pointing to the FSX folders for airplanes, they'd need adding to FSX, not FSX-SE (and gauges copied over). Another way would be to add a local entry to the SimObjects list pointing the the FSX-SE airplanes. But if so be careful of duplicates. They won't be liked at all!

If you are thinking of adding in future to FSX-SE not FSX, then it might be best to create a new folder altogether for your add-on planes, and move them all out of the FSX airplanes folder into that, and just add its path to another SimObjects line in both FSX.CFG and FSX_SE.CFG files.

FSX is very flexible about SimObjects and Scenery locations and you can make use of these pointers and paths to achieve all sorts of different arrangements. It's a shame that Effects and Gauges cannot be redirected too, but at least they tend to be easy to merge.

I have ditched classic FSX for FSX SE. And like most long term FSX users, have a multitude of add-ons of various types etc. Well, let me tell you, it has been a most rewarding experience. All of my add-ons, which include- FSUIPC, ProATC X, FS2 Crew, PMDG 737 & T7, REX4, Soft Clouds, ASN, EZDOK v1.18.5, GEX, UTX Europe v2, UK2000, Aerosoft (Airport and Aircraft), PrecipitFX, MY Traffic, AI Controller, Traffic Manager, Aivlasoft EFB, three different versions of ACARS VA Software, and Sim Starter, work without any problems at all. On Tuesday I also did a complete re-install of everything and it took me just three and a half hours! I also use no tweaks at all, and have not touched the cfg file once since I first installed FSX SE. My average fps, on the ground with AI traffic at 25% is 24 and much smoother, all this running in DX10 with cockpit shadows using DX10 Fixer. Oh, and I forgot to mention, that I have verified the integrity of the files about six times, with all add ons installed, with no problems at all.

This is most encouraging, as I have just uninstalled everything, both previous FSX and FSX-SE installations and am about to re-install just FSX-SE, Many thanks.

Updated procedure for dual install.

1) Install FSX-SE into a new directory on your current FSX Drive (Could be another drive but this is the way I plan to do it).

2) Modify your current FSX scenery.cfg file so that you now have full paths including Drive.

3) Copy over the scenery.cfg file located in ProgramData\Microsoft\FSX folder to the FSX-SE folder next door. It doesn't go into the FSX-SE folders in Steam.

4) Edit the FSX_SE.CFG file, in the AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\FSX-SE folder.  Look for the SimObjects entries, make any of those you want to share full paths -- probably only the Airplanes one and maybe MyTraffic or other traffic folders.

5) Copy over your FSX guages, modules and effects folder to the Steam edition.

6) Fly!

I've had  a similar experience with FSXSE! The only addon I can't seem to get to work is "Shade"! That said there is a problem that is rearing it's ugly head this week. Right now there is a Beta of FSX-SE out which is only has a few days left at this point. It's main feature is it will allow you to run FSXSE in offline mode, a good thing! The problem currently it broke 3 addons. ASN, which is now fixed with a new BETA release (5547), the Aerosoft A3xxx series, and the PMDG T7. If these last 2 are not fixed either by DTG, or PMDG/Aerosoft by the time this FSXSE BETA goes live, then they will not funct6ion, due to the way Steam pushes automatic updates, with no official way to suppress them. There are a couple of ways that are suppose to suppress them I've found on Youtube, but don't know if it works.

1. Is to Set updates to only download on launch of game., Then setup a new Non Steam Game shortcut pointing to the Steam version of FSX. Then use only that shortcut icon to launch FSXSE. If you use the official shortcut at anytime after the release of the update, it will be too late, and the new version will download.

2. The second option I found  is suppose to suppress all Steam updates for any game. Again I don't know if this really works. Create or modify (There may not be one already) the steam.cfg file in your main steam folder (Not the FSXSE one)  and add the following line

BootStrapperInhibitAll=Enable   (To re-enable updates set to Disable)

The problem with this method, is if you have other Steam games, they won't update as well.

Thanks

Tom

I hope, that as the beta was, well, just that a beta, they will have taken on board peoples complaints about the T7 and Airbus. And if they can't fix them by the deadline, then hold back the patch until they are fixed. All credit to HiFi for jumping on the problem as quickly as they did.

How do you do that? I don't see such an option here?

Incidentally, for many the main feature of the Beta is that it seems to have fixed most of the G3D and TERRAIN crashes which plagued many users.

I think it is up to the third parties supplying add-ons for FSX-SE to make sure they are on the DTG Beta list. The true Beta test period started well before it went to "Open Beta".

Well....

You have to be offline first. Disconnect your internet, Open Steam, and click "Start in Offline Mode".

Or...

You can also go offline from opening Steam, and clicking "Steam" in the upper left corner, then "Go Offline...".
