Determining landing and takeoff runways (VatSim no controllers online)

Recommended Posts

What is the correct way to determine the landing and takeoff runways in VatSim when there aren't any controllers online.

I currently use FSX with NEXT for managing the weather set to VatSim network.

When approaching an airport or wanting to depart what is the best way to determine which runway to use while flying in VatSim?

I normally review winds in NEXT and connect to ATIS for that airport in FSX to verify winds and see which runways it publishes are being used.  We had a discussion last night and someone said that isn't a valid way because FSX weather can be different than VatSim.  Since I'm connected with NEXT and weather in FSX is matching VatSim, I think???, is that the correct procedure?

If not what is the approved procedure for this scenario with no controllers and multiple planes in the same location.

There have been multiple times lately that pilots are using opposite runways at the same time creating an unsafe environment.

Thanks in advance for feedback.

Use the METARS to ascertain wind direction and speed, then use the appropriate runway. 99.9% of airfields in FSX/FS9, when using Vatsim, have no controllers and should you see that there are other aircraft in the vicinity, which may be using that airfield, then call them up and ask what they are using!

Fly, Navigate, Communication.

I use FS Real Weather Lite for my online weather source. Seldom has that been different from what Vatsim Controllers, or other aircraft are using. So, look up the appropriate airport, check the weather for the time and make my decision based on that info. Also, since Vatsim sometimes marches to its own drummer, you have to be aware that they may give you a more "convenient" runway for them. Make do with whatever.

Thanks for the input.

I agree on weather programs keeping the same in both in FSX and VatSim.  I use Active Sky NEXT and it's a great program for matching weather in real time or in VatSim depending which option you select.

One of the reasons for my question is wondering how accurate the ATIS in FSX is if the weather matches is FSX and VatSim.  I'm not sure but thought someone else may know. Might help in those cross wind situations if the program is smart enough.

Again thanks so much for the replies.
