What to invest in FSX-SE vs Prepar3d dilemma

Recommended Posts

DTG have rights to use the abandoned MS Train Simulator 2 engine for their new flight sim. Don't be surprised if former Aces developers are involved in this.

You mean the former Aces developers who don't work for LM on Prepar3D? ;)

I'm a bit of a sim "swinger", but I have to say I have been running FSE:SE for the last week and am impressed by the general performance, and better memory management over FSX and P3D (I have all). Even though I bought all the PMDG stuff (again  <_< ) for P3D I will be sticking with the Steam Edition. I runs DX10 just great with Steve's fixer so I still get the nice cockpit shadows etc.

I know it's difficult to compare, but since I've been using FSX:SE I have had no OOMs. Just as an example, I get well over 1Gb of free vas with the PMDG 777 at Aerosoft's EGLL (+FTXG/Vector/OLCEU), with AI planes (20% Traffic360), all sliders to the right except water and global texture size. It is however imperative to stay at or below TML=1024 to avoid provoking all sorts of issues. The Soft Clouds actually look better than in P3D (no popcorn) and I have nice AA quality to boot.

It's probably the best 5 euros I've ever spent!

Well in a way I am kind of deciding between sticking with FSX but with the FSX-SE (which I don't have yet) vs. Prepar3d. Mostly due to the pricing policy of pmdg.

If the NGX is all that you use, you already have the free upgrade to use it in FSX-SE from PMDG, so no cost to you.  If you like the P3Dv2 environment then buy the NGX again.  Sure it hurt the pocket, but the reward is well worth for me.  I think only PMDG has this pricing policy but some of it is dictated by their agreement with Boeing.  Most if not all other vendors have dual license that either cost very little to get the P3D version or nothing at all.  Overall, if you only fixate on PMDG, you will miss the entire picture.
