Hi guys. I really need your help. FSX was performing well on my system until I installed that freeware Lockheed Constellation that is so popular, I 'll get the name for the next post. Lh, and a DC-4 from the same website. After I uninstalled these two add-ons, FSX was getting a CTD with the weather.dll file. Then, with the api.dll file. So, I repaired FSX and now I was getting an FS_Recorder.dll-related CTD. So, I uninstalled FS Recorder v2.18a. But then, FSX will load with nk errors, and I can set up and launch my flight. A few seconds after the flight is loaded, the simulator crashes to desktop, nut there is no message of any error whatsoever. I've tried to see in the AppCrashViewer and in the Windows Event Viewer if there is any error report, but there isn't any.

Is there anything I can do to fix this issue? Thanks.

It is impossible for one or the other not to have a report so you are looking in the wrong place.  If you have no error report, how can anyone help you.  I understand in Windows 95 there was no error reports and we usually had to guess how to fix a problem.  But then, Windows XP and later started giving us error reports so we could try to pin down the cause of the crash.  So you are looking in the wrong place.  So, if you load a flight and the simulator crashes without an error message (which is impossible), the only solution you have is located on page 1 and 2 of the AVSIM CTD Guide.  Delete/move/rename the fsx.cfg, dll.xml, exe.xml and scenery.cfg all at once or delete/move/rename each one at a time until the problem is fixed.  Restart fsx.  Most likely you have tweaks you placed in the fsx.cfg which simply do not work.  You might have even put the uiautomationcore.dll in your main fsx directory because you heard this is the 'holy grail' of all fixes for FSX crashes.  You could have installed fsx or a fsx addon with your anti-virus program still running or the UAC still enabled.  You might not have started up FSX with Admin privileges.  There could be something wrong with the voltages and other settings in your system BIOS.  A wrong or outdated Microsoft Visual or Microsoft.net (see pages 6/7 of the AVSIM CTD Guide) can cause crashes too.

Now, the Lockheed Constellation comes with P3D and I would hope you are not taking the aircraft from a P3D installation and putting it into FSX.  I know it might be freeware on someones website but maybe unsafe freeware?

When you got the API.dll crash, that indicated a problem with memory and especially out of memory crashes.  There is no other known cause for an api.dll crash.  The probable fix for the weather.dll crash is in the AVSIM CTD Guide.  The BufferPool tweak is most likely the cause for both of these crashes.  This tweak can cause major instability of FSX/P3D if not used properly.  Most people do not know how to use it properly.

So, you see there are simply too many causes for crashes.  So many possibilities.  That's why Microsoft came up with the Event Viewer and the Windows Error Reporting system.  It was put there to help you narrow down the cause(es) of your crash(es).  If you see no errors in the system reports and removing the fsx.cfg, dll.xml, exe.xml and scenery.cfg did not fix the problem, then you need to reinstall Windows and then reinstall FSX and each addon.

Well, two things. First, FSX was working wonderfully before I installed the two aircraft I mentioned, which are not from P3D. I hadn't had a CTD for over a year! It used to be a very stable simulator.

Secondly, I can't tell if the error was caused by the two aircraft mentioned, but, really, there's no error report relating to FSX. Probably the simulator is not crashing per se, but there is something forcing it to close unexpectedly. I'll read the AVSIM CTD guide and let FSX build a new fsx.cfg, dll.xml, exe.xml and scenery.cfg to see if the problem gets solved (which I don't quite think it will).

Ok, I read the CTD guide. I let FSX bulid a new fsx.cfg, dll.xml and exe.xml and now there are no more CTDs. Now, I'll have to tweak the fsx.cfg file to get the simulator to perform better; with the default file, it runs very poorly.

I'm glad I didn't have to reinstall FSX.

In most cases you never have to reinstall FSX or P3D.  I do not know why you have to tweak the FSX.cfg to get better performance but the AVSIM FSX Configuration Guide can possibly help.  The settings used in this guide help most members enjoy FSX to the fullest.  There are a few who like to tweak FSX and we do not recommend it.  Maybe before 2011 but the systems and video cards are really powerful today.  If you tweak a system today you risk anomalies and crashes.  I have tried the Bufferpool tweaks but I saw stuttering and occasional crashes so I took it out.  I don't use Autogen so don't see any reason for the Bufferpool tweak.  It's my understanding that the AffinityMask tweak provides little or no performance gains as FSX was made before you had all of these CPU's with many cores.  I don't use any tweaks and I am crash free and my fsx runs great (my settings are in the AVSIM FSX Configuration Guide).  The only thing I don't like about the AVSIM Guide is the fact the settings are almost maxed out and I that could cause problems with basic systems.  It's just a guide.  Only you can find the sliders that work best for you and all of your add-ons.

Well, it happens that the error was not located in the fsx.cfg file! I replaced the new file with the old one I had, and the simulator doesn't crash. So, the error is probably in the dll.xml file. When I say "tweak FSX", I mean this very lines of code that make FSX perform better in my computer and reduce the horrible balloon effect that comes with the default FSX lights.

[BUFFERPOOLS]
Usepools=0

[Display]
RUNWAY_LIGHTS_APPROACH_SCALAR=0.65
RUNWAY_LIGHTS_STROBE_SCALAR=0.7
RUNWAY_LIGHTS_SURFACE_SCALAR=0.75
RUNWAY_LIGHTS_VASI_SCALAR=0.5
WideViewAspect=True
TEXTURE_BANDWIDTH_MULT=80

[GRAPHICS]
HIGHMEMFIX=1

[JOBSCHEDULER]

Good luck!  Hopefully your investigation has found the cause of your crash(es).  I have no problems with your display settings.  The bufferpools tweak causes instability in most of the latest and greatest computer systems but you are most welcomed to try it in your system.  It brought my system down and I had periodic unexplained crashes until I removed it.  The Display settings look okay.  Many do not like the default runway lights.  I have no problems with the (maybe that's because I have a 30 inch monitor?).  The AffinityMask setting does not work in FSX but I see no problems with you putting it in your config.  The following link provides more information -  http://www.flightsim.com/vbfs/showthread.php?251736-FSX-Affinity-Mask.

In regards to the Terrain 'tweak', I suggest looking at the following topic and my post #4 - http://forums1.avsim.net/topic/279576-qestion-re-holgers-autogen-tweak/

The fun thing about FSX is the fact you get to 'tweak' and 'tweak' some more and check FPS all of the time and look at the amount of VAS remaining. Then you get to suffer multiple crashes and spend a lot of time investigating the "crime scene" and fixing it. Then the process starts all over again. Personally I just set my LOD_Radius to 6.5 and my Texture_Max_Load to 2048 or 4096, and go fly.
