Intel i5 4690K suitable for Prepar3D

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

The following is my PC configuration:

AMD Phenom II X4(quad core) 955 Black Edition OC'ed to 3.9 GHz
6GB DDR3 1333 MHz
Zotac Nvidia GTX750Ti
1 TB Seagate HDD

Addons Used:

ORBX FTX GLOBAL+VECTOR
FLY TAMPA DUBAI
LH SIMULATIONS LHBP
REX 4 TEXTURE DIRECT

OPUS FSI WEATHER ENGINE

PMDG NGX 737 + Liveries

EZDok Camera

Even though I have been able to OC my processor to 3.9 GHz, I am still getting around 5-6 fps in PMDG 737 NGX on the ground and around 10-12 fps while on air.

I have read posts saying that overclocking the CPU helps in Prepar3D and FSX fps gain, but I was not able to achieve it even after overclocking.

I have gone through posts and have been informed that my processor is the bottleneck and I should go for Intel CPU like i5 4690K or i7 4790K. I am considering the former as it suits my budget.

However while budgeting for the system upgrade I found that I am running short of money for the motherboard(Z97 - chipset). So I was just wondering, how will the i5 4690K perform at stock speed? If it performs quite well then I can go for a H97 motherboard and save a bit of money there.

Also if possible can someone post a link to a video portraying P3D gameplay with similar system configuration so that I can fully understand what to expect out if it after the upgrade.

Thanks in advance.

Best,

Arghya

Don't save on the motherboard... the whole reason for getting a "K" model CPU is to be able to overclock..

In less than a couple of weeks the Skylake CPUs will be released, so if you can wait, you might get a better price on the 4690K, which will allow you to get the Z97.

Don't skimp on the motherboard!

Absolutely go with a Z97.  You can't skimp on the motherboard - after all, it's the backbone of the PC.  The 4690K is excellent for P3D.  Also, get at least a 650W 80 Plus power supply and a good CPU cooling system if you plan on overclocking.

That's a good suggestion. I'm also waiting. Do you have any information how many weeks we're off from the Skylake release?

Cheers, Bert

Skylake delivery is early August, 3rd I believe. I'll have a lapped i7-4790k and ROG z97 for sale shortly thereafter.

The 6700K and 6600K are expected to debut sometime during the Gamescom 2015 event (August 5th to 9th), not sure if it's going to be a paper launch though. Availability may begin later.

The https://flightsystems.ca/ doesn't seem to be in business anymore. At least I cannot rich ANYONE from there for a week now! Even the phone number listed on their site is inactive now.

I bought a computer from them a couple of months ago, and while it's working fine so far with prepar3d and NGX (knock on the wood), having a company gone missing in action like this without any prior notice or any acknowledgement to my requests is scary!

I would caution anybody thinking of purchasing a custom built PC for flight simulation purposes to explore the alternative companies.

I take my words back about flightsystems. They ARE still in business. It was just a bad mix up in the communication channels and now all sorted out. They've kindly contacted me and now we are all on the same page!

And BTW, as I mentioned, the computer that they have built for me is working like a champ!

So, please, disregard my message above.

Dmitriy.
