Everyone else really successful with FSX in Win 10?

Recommended Posts

Small story of my W10 experience: I did the upgrade from W7 to W10, trying to avoid a compelte new installation (would take ages...). My computer had some troubles with the nVidia W10 drivers, it somehow needed several restarts until the error message disappeared and everything was back to normal (I thought). Could be that it was also not the most intelligent thing that I changed my graphics card from a GTX-780 to a GTX-980Ti just days before the upgrade process, who knows. However:

- I started FSX back on the W7 system after the GPU exchange once to set the resolution etc. It worked (did not test it for more than five minutes, sadly...).

- I ran the upgrade process to W10, the only issue I had was this driver issue with the W10 driver from nVidia.

- I tested FSX: some aircraft, some sceneries, AES, A2A, weather engine, TrackIR. All worked at once, I did not realize any issue (sadly, again I did not spend more than five minutes in an aircraft...)

- for some days, I did not touch FSX at all. In those days, there were two updates for ORBX products (Bella Coola and Ketchikan) as well as an update for the DX10 Fixer. I installed them without checking FSX.

- recently, there was a new driver release from nVidia. Some days later, I installed it (last Saturday). Finally, my last driver issues (no Controlpanel access by right clicking on the desktop) were gone, the driver installed without any problem.

- after several restarts, I wanted to perform my first full flight after the upgrade to W10. I chose Bella Coola as starting field and the A2A Cessna 172 as plane. Everything seemed fine, except that my cockpit shadows were gone (?). Well, minor issue I thought, might be a setting inside DX10 Fixer that was messed up with the update. Then, after I started the engine while taxiing to the runway, I heard those boring windows beeps indicating a full or near full VAS. What?! Five minutes after firing up FSX? I thought, well, that must be wrong. But the beep continued and after two minutes into flight, my FSX went down the drain with the classic "not enough memory" message... EXCUSE ME?! I never had any OOM for the last two years at least, since switching to the DX10 Fixer, my OOMs were basically eliminiated and now this, 7 Minutes in FSX and already an OOM...

This is ridiculous and I really slap myself for not testing FSX a little bit longer after upgrading my graphic card, after upgrading the driver, after upgrading the OS and after upgrading other things (ORBX patches, DX10 Fixer). Now I can not tell where the issue is and I am basically lost, back into FSX tweaking and modifying, something I did not have to do for the last two years. What a bummer!

Well, I will start off by deleting my FSX.cfg, removing all shader cache folders and removing the logbook, basically starting from scratch (except the addons which remain installed, of course). I hope I can solve my issue like this, I really do not want to perform a new installation from scratch, as there is soooooo many addons on my build, it would take me a week to be back on track...

That's my refreshed experience with W10. Honestly, I thought that the upgrade process went without issues. Regarding other games, this is also the case, but of course, this piece of software called FSX results in troubles. In the end no big surprise, just a pity...

I just finished by upgrade to Windows 10 and so far (24 hours) no major problems. I did have a problem with a couple of payware add-ons but it was my oversight. They have the ability to TRANSFER license (which you need to do since W10 is a "new" platform), but requested a reset of license keys and was able to get them working with no problem. Performance does seem a little better BUT time will tell. I am still a little nervous about Microsoft controlling the update process.

The "solution" to my W10 FSX problem was easier than I thought: it was SweetFX. While this seems to work without any issue under W7 together with the DX10 Fixer, it simply does not under W10. As soon as I removed all SweetFX files, my FSX was back to normal. No OOM, no crashes, no problems. Perfect.

Short update to my previous message about successful migration to Win10 ;

Did a long range flight this week-end : 11 hours without acceleration or pause, from Rio de Janeiro to Paris Charles de Gaulle, in Pmdg 777/200, with following configuration :

- FSX , DX10 Scenery Fixer + NVidia Inspector + EZDok
- Orbix FTX Global + FTX Vectors + FTX Global OpenLC Europe + REX4 Texture Direct
- Active Sky Next
- Pro ATC-X
- Professional Flight Planner X
- Paris Photo HD scenery, Paris LFPG Mega Airport scenery

Absolutely no problem.
