VTP, FS9, and texture folders

Recommended Posts

Hi all.I recently looked at a problem with VTP lines and an odd memory loss connected with them. What I discovered was that when we make VTP lines or polys, and use named textures ( rather than the numbers in the terrain.cfg file ), we must be careful with the use of a twin "TEXTURE" folder... just like landclass! If our BGLs use a named texture, all the textures used must be in the local "TEXTURE" folder, or we cannot have a local "TEXTURE" folder at all! If we intend to place the named textures into "...worldtexture", that's fine, but then we can't have some in the local "TEXTURE" folder. Have them all in one folder or another. Also, we cannot have an empty "TEXTURE" folder with scenery using named textures... a memory loss will occur and will either crash or choke the sim's performance. So if your scenery is leaking memory, it's probably the fault of the local "TEXTURE" folder. Your are either missing some textures there, or you shouldn't be using the folder at all.Dick

Hi Rhumba, thanks for the heads-up! The other (more obvious) thing to watch out for is that all the assigned textures actually end up in either the main or the add-on texture subfolder. I placed a couple of textures into a different texture subfolder by mistake and ended up having repeated crashes.Cheers, Holger

Hi Holger.Good advice.I was really surprised to find FS9 so picky about where it's VTP2 textures are located.Dick

Yes, very interesting. This combined with the fact that some texture formats (DXT with mipmaps seems to work best) also give crashes makes that we have to test things like this very careful.

Hi all! Some time ago I also observed the same problem also in FS2002 and it always resulted in crash. Since I was building VTP scenery by hand, I also noticed that at some certain percents of loading the scenery crashes were caused by let's say:- missing last instruction VTPWidePointWidth 0- improper counting of points- improper counting of lines used by one texture; not always this resulted as a crash- improper counting of number of textures or cells usedPay attention to all of this stuff above! As Rhumba said, You can also use name of the texture used by autogen (and found in SCENERYWORLDTEXTURE) but don't expect to have any autogen then! For example, in FS2004 You can have golf course somewhere but by night You can use grassland (why: because You don't want to have city lights on golf course by night!).Hope it helps and best regards,Goran BrumenFS Slovenija 2002 teamhttp://slovenia.avsim.net
