Hello all,
My name is Mark and I've just recently joined the community. I've been dabbling in flight sims since the the days of monochrome screens and boot disks. Recently, life has led me to the purchase of a house which I plan never to leave. The best part about it is that I've been given permission and space to build a true home cockpit set up. I'm an instrument-rated private pilot with intentions of earning additional ratings. The problem is that I don't get to fly nearly enough to keep me sharp. Enter the sim. I'm slowly acquiring components to put together a sim that is realistic, but not over-the-top expensive. My goal is to be able to simulate single and multiengine GA aircraft for mainly doing instrument procedures practice. Here's what I have so far as far as components:
X-Plane 10 and FSX
Saitek Yoke and Throttle Quadrant
Saitek Cessna Pedals
Saitek Throttle Quadrant
Saitek Switch Panel
3x Samsung 23.6" Monitors
1x Acer 23.6" Monitor
TripleHead2Go
Computer is an HPE 570f Processor 3.2 GHz Phenom II X6 RAM 8 GB DDR3-SDRAM Hard Drive 2000 GB Graphics Coprocessor AMD Radeon HD 6770 Chipset Brand AMD Graphics Card Ram Size 4091 MB
The coolest component so far is my seat. It's the captain's chair out of a Convair 240 that my dad and I rescued before the whole airplane went to the scrap yard. I'm restoring it to full functionality
My plan is to get a 24" touchscreen monitor and run FlyThisSim software. I would love to have physical knobs to turn and buttons to push, but I haven't found anything I like or are willing to pay for. I also plan to build my own enclosure so that I can completely immerse myself. I told my wife "If I can make myself sweat in the sim, I've built it right."
Does it seem like I have enough computing power to do what I want to do?
Has anyone had any experience with FTS or Desktop Aviator products?
Should I plan to use FSX or X-Plane? (I know FTS software only runs on X-Plane)
What am I missing?
Thanks for hanging in and reading this if you did. I look forward to some responses!!
Mark
