TheFamilyMan has helped clarify things for me.  I have just yesterday changed by NI settings to match what Paul has in his How To Doc.  I think it improved things very slightly to my older settings and it may have done nothing at all because I realize now changes to NI AA settings don't affect the results in FSX DX10 mode.  I have gone with Multisampling 4 and 8 which I think is 4XFSAA although I did select 8XFSAA in the fixer.

There is a tremendous amount of variability in the airport textures depending on the developer and age of the scenery.  My FSDT sceneries are just beautiful, crisp with no jaggies or shimmering while other airports like SFO have very shimmering painted runway lines.  I guess its all about compromises.

Thanks Buddy, but it was inspired (copied!) from yours...

Its getting out of control, we have Dexter, Walter White and now Charles from Mash.  What's next Mr. Cunningham ???

....and why not  .... Some familiar faces brighten the place up.

I've a question if anyone could help?

I'm a little bit thick and can't quite work out which of the BGL files I need to de-activate in the FlyTampa Dubai scenery, for the Papi / Approach lights?   I see lit;s of entries for 'Nav' lights but not sure if I need to be / should be deactivating all of those....  Can anyone help be listing the BGLs that need to be removed in FlyTampa Dubai?

Thanks!

All the information any user needs is available on the DX10 forum, including the "How To Doc".

As you had difficulty setting up DX10 before the fixer was released, you spent a lot of time with Paul who helped you.

This post is a smack in the face not only to  PJ, but also those that helped you.

BTW, I replied to your scathing post about me on the Orbx forum, read it, then read it again. Sometimes I wonder where you are coming from.

Hi Adam, the point I was making is the info that Jeroen posted is available, and readily.Jeroen knows this, so i am bewildered why he as overlooked this fact. Especially the "How To" doc which should be used in conjunction with the fixer.

He has implied that most or all users are left in the dark on how to configure the fixer tool, and the setting up of ones graphic cards.

Avsim have a DX10 forum, and that is what it is for. Nobody has been left in the dark.

I am not going to post anymore about this, as I am still quite angry about the Orbx post, so in the interest of fair play I will continue anything DX10 now in the appropriate forum.

I have no clue what got you so upset (as I also just posted on the Orbx forum). I have no clue what 'scathing' means but I guess it's not something positive. I reread my post there and I still don't know what you are so angry about.

About the information being available: it's not in the manual and that's all I am saying. Information about Inspector and SGSS SHOULD have been in the manual. Not everyone who uses FSX visits this forum and even less people visit the DX10 forum. And even while I did indeed have access to the information here, I STILL was confused which imho clearly shows, let me say it one more, this should have been in the manual. Simple as that. I have no idea why this is a slap in the face of anyone

If you want to talk some more about this PM me: as I said on the Orbx forum I don't think this is the appropriate place for something like this.

Good morning all you DX0 PREVIEW simmers!

I now have Steve Parsons fixer installed with the help of my old friend pj. What took place before we installed was to insert a my backup textures of the original files. We then run the DX10 fixer. Everything looked good until I run  my A2A Piper Cub, NO VC SHADOWS! I then read the manual and it told me about the "Enabling VC Shadows" on page 58. So then I went looking for the DX10 TOOLBOX, it is located in the folder you had installed the DX10 fixer. There is a mistake in the writing as it says make sure you make a backup of the file you are about to change. When you make the change the program will make a copy of the file with "ORIG" on the beginning of the file, so you do have a copy of the old file which you can go back to and use if need be. I talked to PJ and he emailed Steve to let him know about the typo.

I then used the DX10 TOOLBOX and added the shadows on the A2A Cub. Loaded the cub in and checked a clear day and started the cub. When I primed the engine I could see very clearly the knob being pulled out and going in as the shadow on the cock pit showed that. I did not have that before the final version because of not having the toolbox to make the changes on the some aircraft.   :yahoo:

I also run the A2A C-172 trainer. Now get this I still had jagged edges on the shadows after running the fixer. I then talked to my old friend again and he mentioned the sun visors and that might be the problem with the sun shinning through the front wind screen and reflecting on the dash. I then pulled both sun visors down and that corrected the uneven shadows which was show the correct shadows in the first place.

After all this and with total satisfaction on the fixer I went on line and purchased FTX Global base pack. I then run that installation and found a whole new sim again with the gorgeous landscape that I have never seen before!!  :yahoo:

Now for the prices, I was surprised the low cost in Steve's fixer, For the time and late night working on something he could had kept for himself is very low priced in deed. Also I want to include the beta testers as they worked just as hard, thank you all. We now have a sim that should had been fixed long ago and now we have it fixed.

I spent $32 fr the fixer and $99.95 for the FTXG and I haven't looked back. We all want a piece of the cake but we sometimes complain about the frosting on the cake. So smile :Just Kidding:  we now have what we have waiting so long for. My  :hi:  goes off for Steve and the testers!! Now we will see a lot of new programs for FSX DX10.

For those of us unclear on on the concept, and maybe it's just me:

Will this thing make the DX10 graphics I can access now look better, or simply run smoother and with less visual defects?

Also, will DX10 and this fix give me better FPS across the board?

Thanks.

Just chucking something else on the table here..........  a lot of people are finding that all the rules, tips, good practices and 'laws' that we know about AA/AF settings (for DX9), go out of the window once you switch over to DX10......... and this was my first impression (a few months back) of DX10 too when I first tried it.......... huge performance increase, nicer colours and rendering, but worse AA/AF.

I then discovered that for me, the answer was a change in AA mode not level.  Firstly let me clarify that I use ATI, so this refers only to ATI cards and drivers.    With DX9 using "Supersampling" AA mode gave stunning visuals with the highest AA and smoothness... but with a considerable performance penalty;

With DX10 I have been able to crank up Supersampling with no problems at all, virtaully no performance hit, and I am seeing all the general DX10 improvements, but also even better AA levels (now) than with DX9.    I have AA level set at 4 using the DX10 Fixer, so not particularly high.      But the Supersampling process means that even with the level at just 4, the visual AA is stunning.

Honestly, for me now, with this tool, DX10 is an absolute no-brainer.  10+ more FPS, greater smoothness, better AA, more fluid experience.     I just need to find out the name of those files for FlyTampa Dubai's PAPI lights, to de-actuvate them.   Ive posted a few times in this thread asking if anyone can confirm the BGL names but they're getting lost in traffic , so I'm going to PM my buddy Badfinger and ask for the file names.

So yes, AA/AF is a completely different beast in DX, controlled by the CFG file, except in terms of mode so try Supersampling instead of Adaptive Multisampling and see how you go.

1) PAPI lights: search your folder (FSX/Addon Scenery/Fly Tampa-Dubai/scenery for *papi.bgl. I put .off as the file extension so that I could come back and change the filename when (if) a fix is found. As opposed to deleting the file which I do not recommend.

2) For the lead in lights I'm GUESSING *apprlights.bgl are the "black squares" of the lead in lights. There are also appr.bgl files in the same folder, so I'm not sure which should be disabled to get rid of the black squares

Thanks, I looked and didn't notice anything as obvious as those file names - will take another look! thanks again

Installation Error: Error copying \\Microsoft Flight Simulator X\Texture\envmap.bmp Error was 2

I'm stuck at installing libraries.

I can just rename my envmap.bmp, but I'm not sure.

Any idea?

Thanks,

Dirk.

What will you see in the sim with dawn/dusk smoothing set to 0? What visually are you losing?

Eric,

I have just completed a short test flight in the UK with respect to this, and I did not see any difference whatsoever with DawnDuskSmoothing set to "0". I should point out that I have REX Essential installed, so I guess it's possible that this could be doing something separately. Someone without any weather addons installed needs to test this out to confirm it....

For anyone who has not seen my comments elsewhere, having DawnDuskSmoothing set to "1" causes ground textures at UK2000 Xtreme airports to appear a lot darker than normal. This effect disappears with the above set to "0", so I have kept it at that.

There's no envmap.bmp, there's only envmap.dds, and I think I know where it is from.

Anyway, what should I try to do here?

Thanks,

Dirk.

Hello

Looking at the pictures and descriptions this appears to be a nice add-on for FSX.

I would appreciate guidance to help me figure out if I need this or not. Here are my questions:

(1) Is DX10 usage an FSX feature one can turn on/off on the FSX settings?

(2) Is DX10 a feature that compromises performance in FPS?

(3) Would this add-on fix have effects / improvement in the regular FSX views ( sceneries VC's etc) that are not add-ons?

Thanks in advance..

Alvaro

Microsoft set it up so that you could use your same settings you use for FS9.  You just have to enable DX10 Preview and restart the system.  You can go back to DX9 anytime you want but you will have to uncheck DX10 Preview and restart FSX for that to take affect.

The DX10 fixes only change files belonging to DX10 and none of the DX9 files are affected.  So you do not need to uninstall anything in the event you do not like DX10.

Microsoft reported that DX10 provides about 10 more fps than in DX9 mode.

Not sure what you mean by would this add-on fix have effects /improvements in the regular FSX views that are not add ons?  DX10 Preview works best for the default aircraft and sceneries.  It works well with almost every addon made for FSX.  It's when a product that was upgraded from FS9 to FSX where problems might occur.

Best regards,

Jim

For the black square lights, go to the Fixer config app, and under "general shader options", make sure that "8bit texture fix" is NOT checked. The manual mentioned that the 8bit fix is mainly used to correct inappropriate transparent textures in very old (FS2002-era) legacy aircraft models, but checking it could cause issues in some sceneries.

Unchecking that option fixed the black square runway edge and centerline lights at OMDB, but haven't checked to see of the approach lights are also fixed.
