Fatal error after loading

Recommended Posts

Hi,  I am having fatal errors after loading my PMDG 747-8 in FSX.  The fatal error occurs a minute or so after the plane is loaded up and I change the views.  It would have the fatal error and then FSX would reboot.  I made at least 6 attempts, but the error kept coming back.   I had this problem exactly one year ago this month.  I tried to look at my old content in AVSIM, but it will not pull up. Despite this,  I do remember I was never able to fix the problem and just quit flight simulating for the summer and tried again in late September and the problem seemed to fix itself. Don't know how!   I don't want to do that again.  Summer is the best time and don't want another lost summer. I do have Fiber Accelerator v1.2 that I just purchased last week and at first I thought that was the cause, but even when I did not activate in FSX, the Fatal error still occurs.  I  do update my drivers on a regular basis and have Iolo System Mechanic to keep my computer clutter free, and updated.  My computer is the following and with the fatal error report.  One is from "Event Viewer" and the second one is from "Appcrashview".

The api.dll is related to OOM/insufficient VAS. There's a long topic discussing the api.dll in this forum - http://forum.avsim.net/topic/389704-fsx-oom-apidll-patcher/. Other than that, I have absolutely no idea how to fix your problem but you can try removing the uiautomationcore.dll from you main fsx folder as that module is part of the Microsoft.net Framework package that developers use to make sure their program runs properly as they intended, including the management of memory.  You could have a conflict with another version of the module.

Jim,

Thanks for the information.  I do need to keep the uiautomationcore.ddll because if I remove that,  I will get fatal errors in flight when I pull up FSX's map.  That problem first occurred when I purchased my first add on aircraft, the QW 757 over 3 years ago.  After I installed uiautomationcore.ddl, those fatal errors stopped.  I did check that forum you mentioned, but it is a bit over my head. I am not a great computer tech in troubleshooting.  Also, the links they provided don't pull up.  Probably no longer available.   I am having so many issues now with FSX. The main ones right now is extremely poor frame rates and now fatal errors.  I have been struggling to fix this for over a month now without results.  FA v1.2 did not help either with the frame rate issue.

The fsx map takes up an enormous amount of resources when moved to a second monitor.  It crashes my system almost immediately (or freezes/locks it up).  I see that it takes a lot of resources too when opened on the same screen but at least it does not freeze up or CTD's.  If you do not want to move the uiautomationcore.dll to another folder and try it to see if that fixes your problem, then you will not be able to troubleshoot.  There is no solution to your problem.  You have to investigate it like a computer tech would do if you took it into a computer store.  That's why AVSIM set up the AVSIM CTD Guide to provide some guidance on investigating a problem where there is no known solution.  There are so many possibilities.  I just provided the link to show you this is a major problem with FSX as identified by someone who has some computer expertise.  If I just said, there's a problem with the api.dll, then you and everyone would be saying I don't know what I'm talking about.  Your Microsoft Visuals and dotnets seem to be installed properly and up-to-date.  It's settings that are creating your problem and maybe a problem with the addon itself.  Some of these addon's are not fps friendly.  I had the QW757 some years ago and saw no problems but if you are not seeing the CTD with a default aircraft or another addon aircraft, then it is probably an issue with QW and it was not installed properly.

Jim,

I have a silly question.  I am trying to solve why I get fatal errors with PMDG 747 at KSFO.  Would day flying effect OOM or other software factors than night flying?  All my fatal errors occur during the daylight hours, with poor frame rates, and with FSX live weather plus FSX flight plan set and traffic at 38%.  But tonight 11:00 PM, (I have not done night flights from KSFO),  I tested FSX with the PMDG 747-8, with live weather and a flight plan set and Ultimate traffic II with traffic at 50%.  I did not use FA v1.2 as well tonight.  There was no fatal error and the frame rates were smooth a silk.  I managed to take off with out a fatal error.  I did not do a complete flight since it is late and I was just testing FSX.  Could night flying effect FSX performance because of less visible detail and using less resources?  Just a wild guess on my part.

I tried again this morning and the fatal error returned after setting up the PMDG 747-8 the same way I did last night except I have traffic at 38%.

Today, I did everything the same last night except I did not have FSPassengersX set up for last nights test.  (I forgot to mention I also use GSX Ground services last night and today) Today, when I loaded the PMDG 747 at KSFO,  everything was going fine, I completed GSX ground services, until I opened up FSPassengersX for loading of the passengers, and when I started FSPassengersX for boarding of passengers,  the fatal error came up.    I exited FSX and rebooted.  I did a second test and this time I did not use FSPassengersX, but I stillI used GSX ground services and was able to taxi.   The frame rates were pretty poor during taxi unlike last night when it was super smooth,  so I decided to turn on FA v1.2, right after I did that, the fatal error came up again.  So I think I narrowed it down to FSPassengersX and FA v1.2 being the culprits for fatal errors.  These fatal errors only occur with PMDG aircraft, not QW757.  I think KSFO is also the cause of the fatal errors because I don't have fatal errors at KJFK with PMDG aircraft, FSPassengersX and GSX ground services,  at least since last week. I will need to test it there also.

There have been a lot of problems with FS Passengers reported here in the CTD Forums.  Individuals uninstall and problems go away.  They no longer support their product anymore (or so I understand).  Night flying should be more demanding on your system or that's what I have seen.

Good to see you are going thru the investigative process.

Jim,

Today I tried a flight with at KSFO with PMDG 747 and FA, but not with FSPassengers.  After about 5 minutes, things started to freeze up and move slow.  and then the fatal error came up.  On the second attempt I made sure FA was not activated, but the fatal error came back, much sooner.  The same on the 3rd.  So what I did was shutdown my computer and restart completely.  By doing that, the fatal error did not come back with the 4th attempt.  I did not have FSPassengers or FA activited.  Doing a complete shutdown seemed to eliminated the fatal error because simply exiting FSX does not seem to do the trick.    I still need to make a full flight to see how it holds out, but I seem to never have the time lately.  So as it stands right now, FSPassengers and FA is the possible cause of the fatal errors.  It is odd though having to shutdown my computer is the only way to cure the Fatal error curse once it comes up.

If you have FSUIPC installed, check the fsuipc.log the next time you see a fatal error or your sim slowing down.  It will tell you whether you were near to having an OOM or not.

When you shutdown your OS and restarted, it cleared the VAS and caches giving you more memory to work with when you started up FSX again.  Although FSPassengers may be buggy (highly unlikely), I doubt it is the cause of your crashes.  If you are running low on VAS, fsx will slow to a crawl and then crash.  This is caused by high settings, high overclock, high display driver settings and Windows OS running OS functions in the background (which use the VAS too).

Jim,

My computer is running extremely slow and freezes a great deal on just about everything I do and is getting worse with time, despite of using iolo Systems mechanic and keeping my drivers updated.  I think my computer is simply wearing out.  It is almost 4 years old and I am considering replacing it with a better one that can handle FSX with it's add ons. I am not replacing it just because of my FSX issues, but everything is running too slow with continuous freeze ups. Would the following features be adequate, in your opinion for FSX with various add on aircraft and airports?

Sincerely,
Cray

Windows 7, Intel 4th gen quad-core processor

Operating system - Windows 7 Home Premium 64

Processor - 4th Generation Intel® Core™ i7-4770 processor quad-core [3.4GHz, 8MB Shared Cache]

Memory - 8GB DDR3-1600MHz [1 DIMM ]

Hard drive - 1TB 7200 RPM SATA Hard Drive

Graphics card - Intel HD Graphics [DVI-D]

There is another of the same brand with the same operating system, processor, memory and hard drive, but with the following graphics card, also would cost $400 more.  It is also liquid cooled.

4GB Nvidia GeForce GTX 745 [DVI, HDMI, DP, DVI to VGA adapter]

Graphics card - Intel HD Graphics [DVI-D]

Hi Cray,

This is not a graphics card but built in (integrated) graphics into the i7-4770 processor. It can run many games but I heard not at high settings. FSX users will have issues unless they have a dedicated internal graphics card. So my suggestion is to go with the more expensive GTX 745.

You will not be able to overclock your system unless there is a "K" at the end of the i7-4770. So, if you don't get the 4770K, you will be stuck with 3.4GHz which is okay but with the 4770K you can overclock up to 5.0 but you will need some additional equipment for cooling if you go that high. I have mine set at 4.2GHz with the $75 Noctra D-14 cooler. I could go up to 4.6GHz with this cooler but I have decided not to.

Jim,

Thanks for the information.  I have read in various forums about "overclocking" and never really understood what it does in FSX.  I never tried overclocking and also on some tweeking FSX websites,  it is not recommended to overclock without it causing other issues.   I don't think I will be able to go with the higher end computer with the liquid cooling system because I just learned of CPU size.  It is 3 inches longer and It will not fit in limited space I have.  So I may like go with the first choice.  It is an upgrade from what I have now.  My current HP has 6.0 GB  and 2.8 GHz while the one I am considering 8.0 GB and 3.4GHz.

As for the Graphics,  I screwed up when I mentioned it above for the 7-4770.  It would be a 4GB Nvidia GeForce GTX 745 (DVI, HDMI DP, DVI to VGA adapter

Try to delete (if you don t need it/like it / use them any more) the fsx missions gauge.

Good paywares use a looooot of gauges, passengers is another one, you may run near maximum gauges value in fsx.

This creates api.dll errors if i can recall the code correct.

You really do not need to overclock with the current chipsets. Overclocking does not remove the stutters, the blurries, and other anomalies found in FSX. I occasionally go back to my basic clock and fsx runs just as well. So I agree with you on this. I just wanted to make sure you were aware that only the K series can be overclocked and all the other series are locked.

If you can afford an SSD, that would be a nice addition as FSX does load faster with the SSD. Once running though I'm not all too sure about whether the SSD performs better. I have my fsx on a SSD and all of my photoscenery located on HDD's.

This is an interesting comment. Are you sure the i7 4770 is compatible with your current Motherboard? You want to make sure it is compatible - https://pcpartpicker.com/parts/motherboard/?compatible_with=intel-cpu-bx80646i74770k.

Jim,

I was not very clear when I was referring to the "size", I mean't the computer itself will not fit in the location of my very small computer table.  The liquid cooled unil computer is larger in size and will not fit where my current computer is located.
