square cloud textures

Recommended Posts

Hi

I am currently trying to learn how to fly the Airbus X which so far is going ok, I have however noticed that while in virtual cockpit view I enter the flight plan into the flight computer I then go back to look out of the window and all my clouds have gone a sqaure shape. After a second or two they go back to normal, Is this normal?

I'm currently using Active Sky Next SP1 with default cloud textures,

I have never seen the effect with ASN SP1. Something, maybe a tweak or high setting is slowing down the rendering process.

I tried using the default weather engine instead of ASN and the result is the same so that eliminates ASN. The only aircraft I have the problem with is the AIrbus X. Please see attached screenshot. it does look like a texture loading issue.

My system is an I7 4770K 4Ghz, GtX 770 2GB, Windows 7 8 GBram.  Ultimate traffic 2, ASN and FTX Global .

In the Display section of the fsx.cfg, change the WideAspectView parameter from False to True (if you have a wide screen).

If you had a program like REX or FEX installed, I would say the problem was the texture compression (32 bit is the best; DXT5 is used by some with slower systems). But you say you are using the default textures. Maybe you had GEX, REX, FEX or ActiveSky2012 installed in the past where you could install cloud textures and enable certain settings, like 32 bit or DXT5. When you uninstall these programs, they don't necessarily bring back your default textures that might have been saved in a backup. Your fsx settings are definitely not too high but there is something that is slowing down the rendering of your cloud textures.

I see you have FTX Global installed. I'm not familiar with this program (I use photoscenery exclusively), but does it replace your cloud textures too? If so, maybe you can disable FTX Global and see if that fixes the problem or go into the configuration settings and change the cloud textures.

If none of the above applies in your case, then I would recommend you back up your config files like fsx.cfg, xml.dll, scenery.cfg and do a repair by inserting your FSX Deluxe disk first, select repair, then the Acceleration disk and select repair. Once completed, then restore those configuration files from the back up.

Hi Jim

I noticed that i had two entries for wideaspectview, one set to false and one set to true. I have taken out the false one as i do have a widescreen, i have never had any other textures installed as the PC was built for me about 4 months ago with FSX in mind. As for FTX global its only ground textures that it replaces. So it looks like I will try the repair option you suggested, before I take the plunge is this easy to do ?as I have never attempted it and would hate to loose everything.

Do I need to back up just the files that you mentioned?

kind regards

Thinking more about a repair and I no longer recommend it. Did you ever rename or move your fsx.cfg to a temporary folder, restart fsx and let the config rebuild? That amounts to about the same as doing a repair. Based on your comments that you have only had the computer for about 4 months, I cannot see how the default textures could have been changed. If you run FSX at the default settings, will this render your clouds faster? If so, then I would suspect high settings in the fsx.cfg and display drivers. Your fsx.cfg settings look okay but it is hard to see all of the sliders. Autogen is probably too high as it is a framerate killer. In the NvidiaInspector settings the AA Transparency Supersampling setting can bring your FSX to its knees if you have it set to 8x Sparse Grid Supersampling (coupled with other high settings). If you rename or move the fsx.cfg, you can always bring it back if my suggestion does not work.

I just noticed the photo in Post #4. It appears you have nine (9) Windows open and you somehow minimized the Windows and placed them at the top of your screen. If you have that many Windows open, that's your problem.

Hi Jim

Its been a while since I have asked FSX to rebuild the config file so I will give that a try and leave everything at default to see if that improves the rendering speed. I'll also back up my file incase I have no luck. re the windows on FSX, I only have one window open and thats set to full screen, the 9 windows at the top of the screen are part of the Airbus, it lets you click to different views with just one click. I have enclosed a pic of my nvidia settings, I have not touched these at all, maybe the airbus takes more out of my system with these settings.

Your Nvidia Inspector settings are almost exactly like mine my AA-Behavior Flags is Treat Override any application setting as Application-Controlled, AA Mode is Enhance the application setting, and Vertical Sync Tear Control is Adaptive and Vertical Sync is 1/2 Refresh Rate. I use to have the settings you have but have made some minor changes.

Hope rebuilding the config works!

Well i tried rebuilding the config file and still had the same results. I then turned down all the settings and that made no difference either, so I tried a couple of other aircraft and was unable to produce the effect so that got me thinking maybe its something to do the the Airbus

To get around the cockpit I normally use the panelview system so what I did was turned the  feature off and used the spacebar and mouse to get around, I left it centred on the flight computer and then looked out of the cockpit and no square clouds so i'm thinking it could well have something to do with the way the set views are set up. I have sent Areosoft a message about this. If I hear anything back from them I will reply on here,

On a side note I am glad that my nvidia Inspector settings are ok, it looks like a complicated but very useful program,  Thanks again for your input Jim, really appreciate it

Kind regards

Hi Darran,

I see that your CPU is running at 4 GHz, have you ever considered overclocking?  The entry "ProcSpeed=9174" tells me that FSX is not getting the boost it needs from the CPU.  My ProcSpeed is up around 19200 and I am running at 4.8 GHz.

You could try deleting your shader cache, a messed up cache may cause some of the graphics to render incorrectly. You can find the shader folder here:

C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\FSX

You can delete the contents of the Shader or Shader10 folder or just delete the folder entirely.

Hi Robert

I have been doing some more testing and have found I have the effect when viewing from top down and then switching to outside view on other aircraft too I have just tried deleting the shader folder and it hasn't cured the problem. I have also turned off settings such as shadows on the ground and lowering the autogen density but it doesnt make any difference. Re my system It was made for me for FSX, it has been oc to 4ghz but I don't know anything about increasing it to more. With my old system which was much slower I never had any cloud problems, I really don't want to do a reinstall of FSX.

I was wondering if me ditching the default clouds entirely would be a good idea?, I purchased Rex 4 textures a few months ago and have never got around to installing them

You might be missing certain effects in the FSX/Effects/Texture folder too. I'm not sure what effects would be related to clouds but I remember several years ago when individuals would get square lighting after a program they uninstalled also uninstalled the fsx default effects. Believe the textures were fx_1, fx_2, and fx_3. A long shot but you might want to make sure you have those still in your fsx/effects/texture folder. I still cannot believe you are having problems! It's looking more and more like you will need to uninstall FSX and then reinstall it.

Since you are using ASN why don't you head over to the forum and ask for help there.  I still think it's your setup because the clouds go back to normal after a moment.

Is uninstalling then reinstalling a major thing  Jim? Is there a  process I need to follow as never done this before. I have a lot of orbx stuff and a few aircraft and so I guess I will need to uninstall those first?
